Becoming blind
Will I go blind?
It is uncommon for a person to go completely blind. Only 4% of blind people can see nothing at all. However, it would be wrong to underestimate the emotional and practical difficulties a person experiencing sight loss may face.
Sight loss is determined by the overall vision in both eyes. If you have been registered blind, it means that the overall vision is at a certain level in both eyes; it does not necessarily mean that you will go blind.
If you have lost sight in one eye, it does not necessarily mean that you will be registered partially sighted. The overall level of vision in both eyes may still be good enough to be able to drive a car, for example.
Being registered as blind or partially sighted by a Consultant enables Social Services to provide appropriate help and support that will help a person to maintain their independence.
