Damien is a member of the award winning Demon Barbers and Mike is a member of the famous Wilson Family.

Two of the finest exponents of Traditional Song in the United Kingdom; it is difficult to accept that these relatively tender young men, have a combined 40+ years experience of performing at Folk venues.

Mike, in the bosom of his native North East of England, very much influenced by his numerous siblings and the wealth of fine singers and musicians, in who’s company he had the privilege to spend the majority of his formative years.

Damien, from a very early age, in the bosom of his native Norfolk, influenced by the Folk Music greats of that rich county, in particular, the masterful Walter Pardon and Peter Bellamy.

Shirley Hudson is a painter and sculptor working in York.

Born in Oxford, she studied sculpture at Cheltenham Art College and was awarded an M.A in Printmaking.

Shirley’s paintings have been exhibited widely in England over the last twenty years, with shows at Badcock’s of Newlyn, Salford City Art Gallery, Dean Clough Halifax, Hanover Gallery in Liverpool, Grosvenor Museum Chester and at the Manchester Academy.

Working with Tom Handley on woodland projects, has drawn Shirley back to figurative landscape, and she is now exploring Ireland and Yorkshire - her homes - in detail and with energy.

Shirley says, “I don’t want the image to be smoothed over and flimsy. I want you to see the marks and the paint and the way I feel about the place or the person when I’m painting the landscape or the portrait. What excites me about the Irish landscapes I’m working on now is being outside, painting physically, boldly. Being and getting really, fully involved in the work.”

Once again, local positive mental health charity Orb Community Arts will be staging its annual showcase at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre as part of this year’s FEVA festival in Knaresborough.

Legendary Leeds band Japanese Fighting Fish will be headlining an eclectic mix of local groups, DJs and performers including beat chemist Rory Hoy, local rock outfits Lobo, Brew Ha Ha and The Complaints, The Poems, Prose & Pints spoken word crew and much more.

The event kicks off at 1pm Sunday 15^th of August and the entertainment will run into the evening both on Orb’s outdoor stage and in the fully licensed cafe-bar.

Tickets will be priced at £4 on the day or £3 in advance (concessions £2). Come down and make a day of it.

'Musician of the Year 2010 - BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards'

John Kirkpatrick is one of the most well-known and popular performers on the British folk scene. He is regarded as England’s leading exponent of ‘squeezebox’ instruments. His remarkable skill with accordion, concertina and melodeon has taken him from folk dancing to experimental rock music and a wide range of international recording collaborations. This long and varies career has involved him in some of the most significant developments in the folk revival over the past twenty five years. He was involved in the creation of some of the most influential folk/rock albums of the 1970’s, notably "Morris On" and "The Compleat Dancing Master". He regularly toured and recorded with Richard Thompson, and played with both the Albion Band and Steeleye Span. Never far from his roots, John always maintained his love of acoustic music and professionally this led to long standing partnership with Martin Carthy, which blossomed into the group Brass Monkey and more recently Band of Hope.

Kris Drever

is a talented guitarist and singer from the Orkney Islands whose debut solo album ‘Black Water’ won him the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2007. He was also an awards winner the following years with Lau, the band that Kris plays in with Aidan O’Rourke and Martin Green, winning ‘Best Group’ in 2008 and 2009. His anticipated second album, ‘Mark the Hard Earth’ is released on Navigator in Spring 2010.
Kris has toured and recorded all over the world with names such as Kate Rusby and Eddi Reader. He is also a noteworthy composer and has collaborated with Roddy Woomble (Idlewild), Ian Carr (Kate Rusby Band) and John McCusker.

Described frequently with such plaudits as "wildly inventive stuff", "grossly overlooked", "one hell of a ride", PO90 are an English contemporary rock band with a serious taste for adventure. The group has found much popularity among the international progressive music scene, an area much ignored by today's music media.

PO90's music has been consistently challenging, alert, politically focussed, yet sensible to the world in which we live NOW. There's always been as much Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails in the band's influential make up as Pink Floyd or Van Der Graaf Generator. PO90 create something that is highly open minded, multi temporo-cultural and exciting and fresh. Jon Loomes sings wonderful folk songs and plays a dozen or so instruments. He breaths fire, writes sonnets, paints in the style of Botticelli and makes violins. An exhibition of photographs by Knaresborough Camera Club. Formed over forty years ago, the club has a membership of 40 with a wide range of photographic ability,

experience and interests. During the winter they meet for a varied programme of guest speakers, practical sessions and competitions. During the summer they have a

less structured outdoor programme visiting and photographing various locations in the Knaresborough area.

Combining the talents of Paul Sartin (Bellowhead) and Paul Hutchinson (Hoover The Dog), Belshazzar’s Feast presents a seasonal offering that delves back as far as the 18th century in search of rare Yuletide gems from English folk history and beyond.

The evening features music from ‘Frost Bites’, their brand new album, but also likely to dissolve into the usual mayhem, this time involving carol sheets, sing-alongs and that unique brand of humour that belongs exclusively to Belshazzar’s Feast.

Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies have been playing their songs and music of Northern England for a decade and a half around the folk festivals, clubs and concert stages of the world.

"Acoustic simplicity coupled with electric vitality" was how they were described in their early days, and with half a dozen albums to their credit, along with solo albums by Jez and by other members of the group, their following has continued to increase. In 2006 alone they have played in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Belgium and of course all over the UK and Ireland.

Strong vocals, backed by outstanding instrumental back-up on guitar, cittern, fiddle, fretless bass, keyboards and Northumbrian Pipes, have made them one of Britain's top attractions on the folk/acoustic/Celtic circuit.

A special event to celebrate World Sight Day & Wear Bright for Sight – so come dressed in your most colourful outfit!

The Hotspots, our in-house band, will be performing during the day and the café will be open for brunch, lunch, snacks and drinks.

Activities will be held throughout the day. You will be able to: see braille demonstrations, take part in visual impairment awareness training workshops, learn how to guide a blind person, visit exhibition stands and our arts and crafts workshops and take a free tour of the centre.

This exhibition celebrates the art, craftwork and achievements of two of the most successful Henshaws art makers. Simon Haw and Debra Roberts have worked at the Arts and Crafts Centre since it opened over 10 years ago.

Simon is a wonderful painter and works in his own large, colourful and distinctive style. Examples of his work can be seen around the centre. Debra makes beautiful pieces of jewellery and other craft pieces and enjoys making items for children.
