I’m a Skillstep graduate

 Andrew

“There is no doubt that Henshaws has been fundamental in giving me back my life.

On my first day at Henshaws I loved how everyone was so committed to helping me. I underwent the Skillstep course, which simply left me astounded, as I never believed I could use a computer again.

Thanks to Skillstep I was able to take up my love for computers and surfing the Internet again using specialist screen reading software. With my new skills I was able to set up my own business called G Wizz Couriers to collect parcels and deliver them around the world. I now have so much newfound enthusiasm for living that I don’t feel like my blindness can hold me back anymore.”

“Before Henshaws I had little confidence in my abilities, but when I was persuaded to take the Skillstep course I loved it so much I’ve never looked back!

I love the way everyone is so friendly and helpful, they are always there to support you if you need it. After Skillstep I became motivated again and decided I wanted to get back into work. I did my placement with Acorn computing where I refurbished outdated computers. I’ve now been kept on as a permanent volunteer and am absolutely thrilled to be doing what I love.”

Thanks to Henshaws I have so much more self-belief, I’ve realised that there is so much more that I can do.

Claire Nichols Smiling“After feeling so low about having to leave the job I loved, Skillstep has given me the motivation to get back into work.

I was terrified about going to Henshaws on the first day.  But the staff instantly put me at ease. They arranged transport for me to get to the centre and met me when I arrived. By the end of the first day I was itching to do more.

I learnt to do things I couldn’t do before, and thought I wouldn’t be able to do because of my sight. We made a giant chocolate cake, and I really got into arty things – which is great when I’m with my young daughter.

The speakers that came in on the course really inspired me. My work experience placement was at a local veterinary surgery, and now I am going to pursue a career working with animals.

I’ve had a tough time but with Henshaws support I’ve come out the other side – with added confidence, a social life and a new career path.”

I found that there’s a real ‘can-do’ attitude at Henshaws. I learned more about computers in ten weeks than I thought possible – I’d never even used one before.  I even applied for a job online, set up my own email account and wrote a CV for the first time.

Skillstep made me realise that I could still pursue my vocation. I did my work placement with Age Concern and I thought, “I can still do this.” And through Skillstep I know about things such as Access To Work, so I am confident about the support I will get when in employment.

Ten weeks ago I was at the bottom of the tree.  Now, thanks to Skillstep, I am half way up – and climbing!”
