Runners brave the rain to take part in Manchester Marathon

Runners nearing the finish lineWe want to say a huge thank you to all 55 of our runners and over 40 volunteers who braved the wind and rain to support us at the greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday 29th April.  In true Manchester style the weather was terrible but the crowds were fantastic, and all of our 55 runners did us proud and are estimated to have raised over £5000! GO TEAM HENSHAWS!!

Dan Walsh and Jamie Carbet

Dan Walsh and Jamie Carbet

We met a few of our runners after the race, Dan Walsh said:

“It was the first marathon I did in25 years, the conditions were terrible and it was the wind and the rain, more than the actual race that caused the pain! But It was worth it in the end as we raised loads of money for Henshaws!”

Rob Garner

And another runner Rob Garner, said;

“This was my first marathon for 20 years, I managed to run 26 miles in the atrocious wind and rain, It was a hard slog but I did it and raised about £1200 for Henshaws society for the blind! I feel quite proud of myself now!”

Running a marathon is such an achievement. And we couldn’t be more proud of our runners, Glen Lockett, Head of Fundraising at Henshaws was there to cheer on Team Henshaws “It’s been an amazing event, we hope that it continues year after year – all credit to the runners who completed the course in the wind and the rain, and the volunteers who cheered them on!”

We also want to thank Physio World for supplying advice and support to our runners at theRunners nearing the finish line end of the race, as well as ASDA for donations of food and drink – which were much appreciated by the runners.

Well done to all who took part!

Henshaws staff member will travel to ‘Top of the World’ for 175th anniversary!

Richard FountainRichard Fountain is reaching for the stars in his new challenge to thank Henshaws for the opportunities the work has given him and to celebrate our 175th year anniversary!

Richard is a keen fundraiser and loves testing himself with new adventures. He has volunteered for many international charities such as International Aid and Development and Human Rights and now he wants to raise funds and awareness a bit closer to home.

“A while ago I remember ‘accidently’ doing a fundraising bungee jump and this time I like to think I have come up with another interesting, engaging and exciting challenge!”

This autumn, Richard aim’s to travel using surface transportation only; i.e. no flying, Chimborazo Mountainfrom our Arts and Crafts office in Knaresborough to the summit of Volvan Chimborazo in Ecuador. At 6,310 metres the peak of Chimborazo is high enough, but because of the bulge of the equator it is also the highest point on the planet from the centre of the earth, meaning it is also the point in which tobe closest to space, the stars and beyond – it is literally on top of the World!

“As well as my work overseas I have always enjoyed high level mountaineering and travel in general, I celebrated my 40th birthday recently by hitching around the world on freighters and cargo ships so I am doubly excited about this challenge. A basic outline of the journey as it stands now is to sail from Europe to West Africa, on to Brazil, down the coast to come ashore proper at Buenos Aires before travelling up through the continent, acclimatizing to altitude and having adventures as I go before finally climbing Chimborazo.”

Richard hopes to complete his challenge in approximately 3 months fundraising along the way via http://www.justgiving.com/Richard-Fountain. En route he will also be publishing a blog of his progress, featuring pictures, video clips and maps of where he is up to.

All monies raised in the run up to and during Richard’s challenge will go directly to Henshaws, even some of the small administration fees justgiving charge he will reimburse himself. His target at the moment is set at £6,310, £1 per metre above sea level to the summit of Chimborazo.

Richard’s blog will be up and running soon and we will let you know when it does, in the meantime please support Richard in this amazing challenge and donate to Henshaws here http://www.justgiving.com/Richard-Fountain.

What an amazing challenge! Good Luck Richard!

Meet Liam Makin an aspiring poet and Scrabble champion!

A picture of Liam MakinAn inspirational 17 year old, Liam Makin, who has been supported by Henshaws for most of his life, shares his experiences and hopes to become a fundraising ambassador for Henshaws.

Liam has suffered from poor sight since he was born, is partially deaf and was diagnosed with a rare disease Alstrom Syndrome at the age of 10. Over the years he has been supported by us through mobility training and attending holiday clubs. Recently he was accepted at the New College Worcester to study A-Levels after Henshaws wrote letters of support describing how his disability should not affect his eligibility to attend mainstream school.

Those closest to him will know him for his tenacious fundraising achievements and his wide range of skills, he supports many charities who have helped him including Alstrom Syndrome UK, Living Paintings and the Children’s Society. He began attending New College Worcester Sixth Form in January this year, studying a wide range of subjects including A-Level German using German braille. In February he was nominated by the Assistant Principal for his determination and inspirational charity work and was awarded the Young Citizen of Worcester Award by the Rotary Club of Worcester.

Liam’s Mother Liz is particularly proud of the way Liam has taken to every challenge, “Liam is amazing and the best son ever. Even at his College his teachers tell me that he creates activities and clubs for the other students, he goes out of his way to support new students. But best of all we love his witty and articulate nature, he never fails to make us laugh!”

In addition to his charitable and academic achievements, Liam knows how important it is to raise awareness of blindness and visual impairment. After completing his work experience at Cherry Orchard Primary School, he was invited back by the school to set up a programme which helps educate students and staff in main stream schools about visually impaired people and the challenges they may face, including teaching them about braille. After the summer months, Liam hopes to take this programme forward into secondary schools and more colleges.

Liam is also an aspiring poet and champion scrabble player. Liam has written many poems inspired by his love for music and everday experiences. He loves the way language can invoke different emotions. He has written two poetry books at the age of 11 and 13 which have both been published. He was also taught by the team at Henshaws how to play Scrabble using braille tiles, which he loved to do. He has set up a Scrabble club at his college and has being crowned Scrabble champion on more than one occasion! Recently he has been entered into the British Scrabble championship to be held in Bradford.

He has now turned his fundraising efforts to raise money for Henshaws and hopes to take part in the Great North Swim  and speak at our luncheon club sharing his experiences and raising awareness about the work that we do.

As we not only work with people suffering from sight loss but their families too, Henshaws has a Parent Support Group which Liam’s parents attend, Liam’s Mother says, “Whenever you ring Henshaws, there is always something or someone at Henshaws that can help. It is the staff at Henshaws that really make the charity what it is, there is no better place to go to for the support we have needed.”

You can see Liam in action below, reciting one of his poem’s he has written about being blind.

Are you willing to put your shirt on it?

I put my shirt on it logoHenshaws has been selected to be the charity partner in a new fundraising intiative “I put my shirt on it” launched earlier this month, and it all started as friendly banter between football fans.

Manchester based entrepreneur James Lindemann and founder of “I put my shirt on it” developed the idea when having a chat with fellow football fans on Facebook, ”It all began when we started chatting about who we thought was going to win the Premier League, one of my friends said “Man City will win the Premier League, and I’ll put my shirt on it.” and another said, “No they won’t; Man United will, and I’ll put my shirt on it.” It was here on in that the idea grew to today’s vision; a company dedicated to bringing an extra element to sporting and non-sporting events, making money for worthy causes along the way.”

The concept is really simple and is a great way to get everyone involved, whether you are a fan of football or not, a red or a blue, wear the T-Shirt and support Man Utd or Man City to win the league over the next few weeks.

If you are willing to put your shirt on your team, then head to the website “I put my shirt on it” and buy a t-shirt for just £10 plus postage, simple as that.  All funds raised will be split evenly between the chosen charity partners - Henshaws and A School under the Tree.

Skillstepper Tracey Haslam is running Half Marathon for Henshaws!

Tracey HaslamOne of our service users, Tracey Haslam, is giving something back to Henshaws after we helped her reclaim her independence, by running the Blackpool Half Marathon in September.

Tracey who has struggled with her eyesight since she was a child wants to share her story and express how Henshaws has helped her in her adult years.

At the age of 8, Tracey lost her sight for 2 years due to cataracts in both eyes; she then had an operation to remove the cataracts when she was 10 years old and unfortunately lost her sight in her left eye. Since then she has regularly suffered from setbacks and lives week by week travelling to and from the Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester for procedures.

Tracey has been visiting Henshaws’ Manchester Resource Centre since August last year after she had further operations to try and stabilise her sight. As well as learning to read Braille, Tracey is now embarking on the Skillstep course, which has already enabled her to meet new people and build her confidence. She is currently the only person that visits the centre with the combination of eye conditions she has, which she says makes it difficult to talk to people about it.

However, from meeting with people that also go to Henshaws, Tracey has been slowly building her confidence and now feels more comfortable talking to people about her experiences. She has a passion for fitness, particularly running and can’t wait to put her training into practice by running the Blackpool Half Marathon.

Before her eyesight began to deteriorate, Tracey ran the Race for Life and really enjoyed the challenge, now because she has been supported by Henshaws she is confident that she can run harder and further with the help of a friend to guide her. She is currently training at the Winton running track for a warm up run – the Bolton 10k – in preparation for the half marathon.

“I can’t say enough good things about Henshaws, and the difference the support and services has made to my life. I am now feeling more and more confident every day and some people have said it is like a light has switched on in my personality, that they can see the old Tracey again. Doing this run makes me believe I can be me again, despite my sight conditions!”

Good luck Tracey!

Henshaws 175th Anniversary Ball was a swinging hit!

Rat Pack and Paula Lane singing on stageLast Saturday night Henshaws kicked off the 175th Anniversary celebrations with a fantastic night at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel in Manchester. The evening was well attended by members of the city’s business community and an amazing night was had by all, and with their support Henshaws raised over £6000!

Guests were greeted with a champagne receptionGuests at the Ball and Nick Marr, Henshaws CEO, started off the birthday celebrations with an inspirational welcome speech featuring a few highlights from 1837, the year Henshaws opened its doors.  In the same year Henshaws opened in Old Trafford as an ‘Asylum for Indigent Blind’, Charles Dickens published Oliver Twist and Queen Victoria ascended to the throne. A fact particularly notable is that the charity is older than the invention of the first car!

“I am delighted with the success of the celebrations on Saturday night, and the impact it has had.  As well as having the opportunity to cultivate relationships with potential corporate partners, I found Andrew Rose’s story particularly moving.  He shared his experiences of becoming blind in today’s world, and how being helped by Henshaws has now put him in the right place to help others who need support.” Nick Marr, Henshaws Group CEO.

Paula Lane, her mother and fiance Tom ShawCoronation Street star Paula Lane also helped get the celebrations in full swing by singing the Frank Sinatra classic ‘Somethin’ Stupid’ with The Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular; the evening’s entertainment. Solo artist Maria Jordan and BBC’s Becky Want and Mark Edwardson also supported the evening’s events which also included a live auction and chances to win other prizes.

Glen Lockett, Head of Fundraising said of the night “I am absolutely delighted that the efforts put in by the fundraising team turned into an amazing event.  The night brought together past, present and new supporters who will now endeavour to ensure that Henshaws gets the opportunity to celebrate in another 175 years. We’ve already started planning next year’s event!”

Well done and thank you to all involved, the Henshaws team can’t wait for the next year’s event!

Local businessman offers his skills to help Henshaws

Tom Clark and Dave Stanley shaking hands in front of Mini Bus

Tom Clark and Dave Stanley

When local Business owner Dave Stanley wanted to do something for charity after reading the story of three year old blind Oscar in the Advertiser, he thought about what skills he could provide and came up with the idea of offering annual maintenance and repair for our Manchester Resource Centre Mini bus at his Garage, DP Stanley Specialist Cars.

He got in touch with Tom Clark, legacy manager at Henshaws, who suggested he could use his skills to service the Renault 14 seater mini bus, which is used to transport people to and from groups at our Old Trafford resource centre.  Tom said “I’m always telling my friends about the work that Henshaws does, and when Dave mentioned he wanted to help in some way, I thought we could really use his skills, as our mini bus was looking a bit tired”

Dave said “This is the first thing I’ve done through my business for charity, and I’m really pleased that I’m able to help.  I see this as a longer term partnership, as I know that the mini bus plays a huge part in allowing people to access services.”

As part of this fantastic partnership, Dave will continue to work with us, by providing an annual safety check, maintenance and repair, servicing, MOT, paint & body work as well as cleaning and valeting – to ensure that it gets people to our services safely and saving us over £1500 a year at the same time!

If you or your business think you might be able to offer your skills to Henshaws, please get in touch on 0161 872 1234 or info@henshaws.org.uk

Henshaws Receives £30k from Heritage Lottery Fund!

Heritage Lottery Fund logoAfter a nail biting wait, Henshaws are pleased to announce that we have been successful in securing £30,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to hold a heritage exhibition ‘Thomas Henshaw: One Man’s Vision.’

After the discovery of a tea chest with artefacts and objects pertaining to the legacy of the charity, the team at Henshaws knew that we had to share share the history and interesting stories found in an all-sensory exhibition. The display will trace the story surrounding Thomas Henshaw’s legacy and the rich history of Henshaws. It will explore the charity’s history and the history of visual impairment as well as commissioning new contemporary artworks. It will feature the fascinating stories from people who have been part of Henshaws throughout the years.

The exhibition is planned to open at Gallery Oldham later this year and will then tour regionally. By touring the exhibition we will be engaging with a much wider audience in the legacy, sharing our history and fostering a greater understanding amongst sighted people of the challenges faced by those with visual impairment.

You can read more on some of the interesting stories and history about Thomas Henshaw and Henshaws here. We will be keeping you all up to date with our progress, but do keep an eye out in the press and media!

Henshaws Volunteer Set to Retire After 16 Years of Service

Ann UrmstonDedicated Henshaws volunteer, Ann Urmston is retiring from her role as leader of one of our social groups after 16 years of service. Ann, who worked for the Health Service for over 40 years came to Henshaws in 1996 after seeing an advert for volunteer drivers for social groups meeting at Henshaws.

Ann’s commitment didn’t stop there, after deciding that she wanted to get more involved with the groups she was helping to transport to Henshaws, she was asked if she would like to take over the lead role in organising the groups and the activities.

“After working for the Health Service for most of my career, I knew that I would need something to not only occupy my time but which would also be helping others too, that’s why when I saw the advert in the local paper for Henshaws Volunteer Drivers I decided to apply.”

The group, which gives members an opportunity to meet and find out more information about the kinds of support they can access for their visual impairments, it is also a great opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences peer to peer.

Ann will be sad to leave her post, but retiring will mean that she has more time to dedicate to her family and endure less of a commute to Henshaws every week from Sefton. This won’t however, stop her from visiting the group, “It’s the members of the group that keep you coming, I’ve made some great friendships over the years and will be sure to pop in every now and again to see how they are getting on. Some of the group members only venture out once a week for this opportunity and really look forward to it, an

BREAKING: £15,000 raid at Henshaws Offices

Picture of Nick Marr by the broken into equipmentComputers worth over £15,000 used by our visually impaired service users were stolen during a raid last Sunday night at our resource centre in Manchester. The equipment, six new lottery-funded Hewlett Packard Pro-Book laptops with 17-inch screens which use a magnifying facility for visually impaired people, including children, were taken.

Nick Marr, Henshaws Chief Executive, said: “We are shocked that someone would steal from a charity.”

Detective Constable Stephen Mathias, said: “It is shocking to think that burglars would go to such lengths to steal computers which that play a vital role in the education of blind children.”

A life without sight doesn’t have to have limits

Andrew Rose in amazon holding a fish he caughtAndrew Rose found out at 21 that he would eventually be left blind by a degenerative eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetic eye condition that leads to incurable blindness.

Many people suffering from RP do not become completely blind until late on in life, however, Andrew is one of the unfortunate few who, now at 37, no longer has his sight. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is one of the most common forms of inherited eye disease with approximately 25,000 people in the UK suffering from it, there is, however, currently no cure.

Andrew’s Journey
When Andrew first learnt of his condition he had just completed his University degree and his unbelievable strength and determination is the only reason he has made it to where he is today, he was told that he would eventually lose his sight but could not be told how long it would be so he decided to take every opportunity he could, “I wanted to do my Accountancy qualifications, so I did, I wanted to travel the world, so I did, I wanted to help others in my situation so I did, I didn’t think I was invincible, I just realised how much I had taken for granted previously”.

After Andrews’s last travelling expedition 2 years ago he returned with almost no sight. He had already given up his job working at Cotrills as Head of Finance, which was a tough decision to take, and had to start facing the fact that normal everyday tasks were going to be a struggle. “I always knew this day would come but i hadn’t really thought about it all that much up until this point”. Andrew had to look for help from others and, after speaking to several organisations and not getting the type of help he needed, his mum suggested Henshaws.

How Henshaws helped Andrew
Andrew enrolled himself on the Skillstep course, a 12 week programme teaching all basic skills from IT to cooking. Andrew then went on to do an advanced IT course and has just started to learn how to read Braille. “I have to admit that the advancements in technology do help immensely, I’m a techno junkie and I like to keep ahead of the game when it comes to innovative new gadgets”.

The achievements he has made from first being diagnosed 16 years ago right up until today are inspiring. He has never let his situation get him down and he owes a lot of this to the people and the support network offered at Henshaws. “The staff at Henshaws would bend over backwards for anyone in need of their help and the people you get to interact with on a daily basis help to make you come to terms with the way your life will change and even offer some helpful tips for day to day life. Without their strength and support i could not have managed to get through this extremely difficult period in my life”.

Sculptor creates unique artwork for Henshaws in memory of mother

David Burt in his workshopWe have recently been presented with a striking solid copper sculpture by renowned artist David Burt, from East Sussex whose work was exhibited in the Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy.

David has supported Henshaws since the death of his mother, Constance Burt, in 1996. Constance was a staunch supporter of Henshaws for over 40 years and left a £1000 legacy for Henshaws in her Will. He wished to continue her good work and since her death has been a regular supporter of Henshaws himself, donating over £500 over the last 15 years and now, in her memory, has created the cast copper piece. The sculpture, which he has named ‘Helping Hands’ was created to reflect the spirit and values of Henshaws and features images of people who have used Henshaws services, is accessible and tactile and features the name of the piece in Braille at the bottom.
Nick Marr with Sculpture
David says of his sculptures “Creating relief sculpture is a journey which sustains my spirit and gives me the feeling that I am leaving a creative expression of my feelings about a subject, which will be my thumbprint in a hundred years.”

The artwork, which he generously donated to Henshaws, is now on display in the Manchester resource centre for service users and staff to enjoy.

“We want to thank Mr Burt for creating such a unique sculpture for Henshaws. Both he and his mother have offered us great generosity over the years, of which we are immensely grateful.” Nick Marr, CEO of Henshaws

Gloomy Autumn Lit Up by Wearing Bright for Sight

Staff at Specsavers doing Wear Bright For Sight This autumn we joined forces with a multitude of businesses,  schools and organisations across the country for our pinnacle  campaign Wear Bright for Sight.

The campaign which is a year-long event,
encourages staff, community organisations and schools to don  their brightest clothes to raise money for Henshaws.

Many businesses across Manchester and Yorkshire arranged events to coincide with World Sight Day on 13th October, and defied the weary autumn weather by dressing in their brightest clothes.

Specsavers in Sale lit up their branch with vibrant wigs and fluorescent tutus whilst Manchester insurance company CBG donned pink feather boas and balloons. Julia Hamer from Specsavers said: “The best thing about this event is not only are you raising money for a good cause, it is so easy and simple. We found the more creative you are with your outfits the more staff and customers alike can’t help but donate!”

Money has been flooding in and these donations have already made a huge difference so we can continue their work to provide advice, services and support for visually impaired people.  CBG representative Vania Burnell said: “It is great to be involved with something so simple and fun, and for such a good cause as well. It not only raises money but it’s great for team spirit, everyone felt more positive and cheerful. We will definitely be doing it again!”

In Yorkshire alone we have raised over £1019.75 with huge donations from Hunters Estate Agents, Hookstone Chase Primary School and the Christ Church Youth Group.

Faye Wilson, Fundraiser at Henshaws, said: “Wear Bright for Sight is a fun way for everyone to get involved in supporting the work we do at Henshaws, and the campaign is a vital element of our fundraising drive.  The great thing about Wear Bright for Sight is that it is really easy to get involved and, of course, you can hold events at any time of year – not just October. You can fundraise in almost any way imaginable too, such as chest waxes, baby photo competitions or a cake bake.”

If you, your colleagues, friends and family would like to wear bright for sight then contact the fundraising office at Henshaws 0161 872 1234 fundraising@henshaws.org.uk or visit our get involved page.

Yew Tree Lane staff win four 'Finalist' Great British Care Awards

We want to congratulate the Yew Tree Lane team who won four “finalist” awards at the Great British Care Award event in Blackpool.  The categories entered were:

Best care worker, Ruth Bates, for her dedication to our residents at Yew Tree Lane since it opened, Best newcomer, Patrick Dixon – who changed careers to come to us and has developed some real innovative therapeutic ideas, and Best Team Overall, in particular for pulling together during the serious illness of a resident and working as a team to do their best for the people in their care.

Kerry also nominated the mother of one of our residents Jean Ashworth, as best unpaid carer and Jean also won a finalist award. Jean has worked tirelessly for many years to get the best for her daughter and has not been afraid to take on officialdom when she’s needed to.

Well done to Kerry and to the team.  The awards are well deserved and it’s fantastic that Yew Tree Lane have done so well at this national event.

Harmony Celebrate their 15th Birthday with Parent & Toddler Group

Harmony Drumming workshop3Last week Kalpna Khuruna from Harmony Multicultural Association chose to celebrate their 15 year birthday with a free Harmony drumming workshop for our parent and toddler group.

Kalpna has dedicated her life to community and voluntary work. She set-up Harmony in 1996 after being inspired by her daughter, Leena; who suffered a breakdown caused by girls bullying her at school. Harmony breaks down social and cultural barriers through the medium of music and dance.

Kalpna's workshop with our parent and toddler group included music with Jembe drums and a Sitar along with traditional dance. Children and Families Team Leader, Fiona Berry says “We are so pleased that Kalpna chose to mark her impressive 15 year milestone with our Parent and Toddler Group. The children really enjoyed playing all the different instruments she brought with her. Henshaws Service Users Gain Success in GCSE's

GCSE twins Two of Henshaws Children and Family service users have  overcome their Visual Impairment to acheive great results in  their GCSE's. Twins Ben and Joe Rendle 16, have been regular  attenders of the Children and Family activities in Manchester.

Ben only lost his sight a year ago when his Glaucoma became  unstable and inoperable.  As a result Ben had to relearn all his  subjects using Braille techniques in just 12 months. But he  achieved an incredible score of A*, 4 A’s, 3 B’s, 3 C’s & 3 other certficates at NVQ Level 2 passes. Ben said “I am extremely pleased that I have managed to pass. I have eye conditions Aniridia and Glaucoma that I was born with and my sight began to deteriorate when I was 12. It has been extremely hard to study as I had to relearn everything not only schoolwork but also daily living tasks. This put extra pressure on me in my studies.”

Whilst awaiting his results this summer Ben trained with his first Guide Dog Len , and is now ready to go onto college independently. When asked if he was proud of his results he replied “ I am proud of my results but mostly proud of passing partnership with my dog Len. It has been a great summer.”

Ben who attended mainstream school – St Edmunds Arrowsmith High. Is now enrolling at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford to study A level Media, ICT, Btec National Diploma in Radio Production alongside Braille Technology.

Joe who is also registered blind and suffers from the same conditions also suffers from severe Eczema /Cellulitis. Despite being in and out of hospital due to his conditions he achieved  an A*, A, 5B’s, 3C’s, and 3D’s.

Joe is going on to the local college to study Travel & Tourism. He said “ I am really pleased with my results especially gaining a B in Maths. I found it hard work but I just pushed myself. I am going to a different college to Ben and it will be hard not being with my brother, but we are going on to do different things. Whilst awaiting my results during the summer I have been on the National Challenge Scheme (3 week course), a PGL scheme and attended the Children & Family Services at Henshaws, so it has been a good summer for me too.”

Proud Mum Wyn, who is also a regular attender of the Children & Family service and a member of Henshaws VIPAR (Visually Impaired Parents And Relatives) group and has done much volunteering for Henshaws over the years. “I am so proud of them as they have both had disruptive learning due to medical reasons. So even if they had gained all C’s I would have been pleased. But for Ben to have produced A’s when he had to relearn everything in Braille as well as cope with the emotional trauma of losing his sight ie exceptional. Their hard work and determination paid off; they are amazing.”

Henshaws would like to pass on their congratulations and wish them further success in their futures.

Blind Ambition

Cameron Davies Formula 1000 Junior double champion Cameron Davies may be  the world’s youngest works rally driver in the world but his new  found fame is not going to his head. The Chevrolet UK driver is  far more mature than his sixteen years of age would convey and  has become an ambassador for Henshaws.

Cameron wanted to work for the charity after seeing Oscar on  the news and in the press. Cameron was so moved with what he  heard and saw, he decided that he wanted to become an ambassador for the charity.

Glen Lockett, Head of Fundraising at Henshaws, commented, “We’re thrilled to have Cameron on board to help us boost the profile of Oscar’s Appeal – being the world’s youngest works rally driver he’s a remarkable young man himself, so I think he really connected with Oscar’s story and the campaign”.

Cameron said, “Chevrolet is a brand built on family values and when I saw little Oscar I wanted to get involved and help Henshaws promote Oscar’s Appeal.  I am very lucky to be driving for Chevrolet UK and I just wanted to give something back to the community. I am really honoured to be an ambassador for Henshaws Society for Blind People – Oscar is such a great kid and I am really looking forward to helping to raise awareness and funds for the Appeal”.

The Beauty Bar embraces the 500 Challenge

Beauty Bar Last month the fundraising team hosted a launch event for their  latest fundraising campaign the Henshaws 500 Challenge, the  event was aimed at engaging local businesses and raising the  profile of Henshaws in the Old Trafford area. After a successful  turnout, The Beauty Bar based in Sale, Cheshire is the latest  company to sign up to the challenge!

The Beauty Bar will kick-off with one of two exciting events  planned for their challenge in September with a Massage Roadshow. Between 10am and 1:30pm every Thursday and Friday, businesses in the Altrincham and Old Trafford area will benefit from a 5 minute stress relief tension massage to the sounds of relaxing music. The massages will be performed fully clothed in a massage chair offering workers a perfect break in their day for a minimum donation of £1. The second event, planned for November, will be an event that will give the staff at The Beauty Bar the chance to show off their other talents in an evening showcasing ‘Beauty Bar’s Got Talent.’

Established 9 years ago in Sale, The Beauty Bar aims to be a friendly and caring salon, where clients can feel at home. Manager of the salon, Deborah Bond, says “we wanted to be different from the usual salons, providing a quality service at affordable prices with top salon brands. The core of our business is to care and in our sensitive industry to listen.”

The Beauty Bar has chosen to support Henshaws after reading about Oscar Hughes, our ambassador for the ‘Helping Henshaws’ campaign run by the Advertiser Newspaper Group. Deborah says, “I remember Henshaws from my school days particularly as I have lived in the area most of my life. As a business we wanted to really show the local community how we care and Henshaws’ 500 Challenge was the perfect opportunity to do this. The team really appreciate life is challenging in many ways and we felt that supporting people, like Oscar, with visual impairments would educate our team and clients about the needs and difficulties that some people have. Celebrity football match a success

Family day out - Montn vs Celbrity ALLSTARSNeil Splaine 42, from Worsley, who died in a tragic motorcycle accident in January, was honoured with a celebrity football Match in aid of Henshaws Society for Blind people, on Sunday 14th August at AFC Monton in Worsley.

His family and friends wanted to raise money to support a charity after his death and as Neil lost a

sister a few years ago to diabetes and his other sister, Valerie, is going blind through the same disease, it was his family’s wish that the money would go towards helping blind people.  They also decided to donate his corneas to medicine, and four people have already benefited from this thoughtful decision.

 Football match being played

His family and friends have been raising money for Henshaws since January, and the football match which was played between AFC Monton and the Celebrity ALLSTARS – a team made up of Celebs from Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks as well as ex Professional Footballers – was their latest effort to support Henshaws vital services for blind people in the North of England.

The day was a great success despite Monton FC losing 10-1 to the ALLSTARS and Neil’s family and friends managed to raise a massive £1015 for Henshaws.

Neil’s sister Valerie, who helped out on the day said,

'I've really enjoyed helping out today, I suffer from impaired sight and it means a lot to me that we managed to raise so much for Henshaws, I think Neil would be proud'

Three-year-old blind Oscar O’Sullivan Hughes, an avid football fan and the face of Henshaws latest fundraising campaign, kicked off the match and he and his family met some of their favourite celebrities on the day.

Kait Hughes, Oscars mum said “We were really proud to be involved in this fantastic event to help honour the memory of Neil, as well as raising money for a cause so close to our hearts”

Faye Wilson, from Henshaws who helped out on the day said;

'The day was a huge success, Monton AFC and the ALLSTARS teams played a fantastic match, and we were delighted that Neil's friends and family raised so much money for Henshaws'

I believe I can fly

Jonathan LoweOrganised by Cargill as part of their fundraising efforts for Henshaws, the challengers started at the Imperial War Museum North, at a height of 30m launching onto a 250m wire across the Manchester Ship Canal, landing in front of the Lowry at Salford Quays.

Everyone involved had a great time, particularly Jonathan Lowe, who lost his sight to MS when he was only 9 years old and has been a Henshaws regular ever since, He sang “I believe I can fly” as he zip wired his way across the Quays from the IWMN to the Lowry.  Other people who undertook the daring feat included Chief executive of Henshaws Nick Marr, many Cargill and Henshaws employees and Pete Hughes, the Grandad of three-year-old Oscar, the face of our latest fundraising campaign.

Jonathan said “I felt on top of the world – like I could fly! When you can’t see how high you are or what’s below you there’s nothing to be scared of!”

So far the total raised is over £3000 but we are hoping that when the final amount comes in the adventurous lot have raised much more.

Glen Lockett, participant and Head of Fundraising said of the day “Although the rain tried to put a dampener on the day, all participants braved the conditions and turned up with their families. It was an amazing turnout and I believe the rain pelting in your face just added to the fantastic experience.”

Swimmers raised over £4000 in Great North Swim

Annie Berrington celebrates after the swimBrave Henshaws challengers took to the cold water of Windermere to take part in the Great North Swim.  About 10,000 people had signed up for the three-day event which they could choose to do a half-mile, one-mile or a two-mile swim.  The weather was typically English, with rain for most of the day but that didn’t stop the 22 people who swam for us raising almost £4,000 between them by completing the swim.

Annie Berrington, one of our Swimmers said of the event “I really enjoyed the experience, we were in the first wave of swims when the rain was chucking it down, but it didn't really matter as we were getting wet anyway!”

Henshaws were pleased with the turnout, despite the event being cancelled last year.  Hannah Saxon, Community Fundraiser said “We were delighted to have so many people swimming for us, and for them to raise almost £4000 is just fantastic, the feedback we’ve had from our swimmers has been so positive, and we hope that many more people will consider taking part next year.”

Many people had their own personal reasons for taking part, Anne said,  “I was pleased to be able to raise some sponsorship money for Henshaws.  My niece, who was born blind, has benefited from your independent living courses in the past.  In fact now she has left school and doing a year out teaching English in Germany so raising this money is my tribute to her determination to live life to the full.”

Cargill Staff presented with flowersWe were delighted to be approached by international company, Cargill with the offer of help, both financial, fundraising and volunteer support, which amongst other things, has resulted in the creation of a fantastic sensory garden at one of our residential homes on Yew Tree Lane, Manchester

Cargill staff have also benefited hugely from the scheme, Jen Gadd, HR Analyst said;

‘Not only was it a privilege to be part of a such a worthy project but it was also a joy to be able to interact with the residents whilst planting and watering in the garden and to see how much enjoyment they got out of helping us.’

Lord Storey opens new Merseyside resource centre

Lord Storey cuts ribbonLord Storey CBE officially launched the brand new Henshaws resource centre in Liverpool on April 5th.  In his inspiring talk, Lord Storey spoke of his past experiences with sight loss at the school where he is now head teacher, and praised the work Henshaws does as well as offering his support in future events.

The event was a chance for local professionals to see what Henshaws can offer to blind or visually impaired people in the Merseyside area, as well as officially opening the new premises.  We have plans to continue outreach and development work in Liverpool and are hoping to start new groups such as a film club (so people can enjoy audio-described films) launch a home visiting service, extend voluntary activities and actively pursue links with minority communities who experience proportionately more sight loss.

Howard Cockeram, Henshaws Chair, spoke about Henshaws legacy in Liverpool and thanked Lord Storey for his support and Nick Marr, Group Chief executive said of Henshaws ‘The VI community and the people in it have a lot to offer.  Henshaws is about trying to give people the skills to get what they want out of life.’

Bill Milner, who is visually impaired himself, first came to Henshaws when he participated in the Skillstep to Success course, and is now the Merseyside Area Manager, said ‘The new centre is fantastic and we’re delighted that Lord Storey has been kind enough to officially open the centre up to the people of Liverpool.  We hope that this is just the beginning and we will continue to provide our vital services to people who need them, with the aim of helping people to move into meaningful work’.

Is your business up to the challenge?

500 challenge logoThe Henshaws 500 Challenge gives your business the opportunity to get involved with a unique event on behalf of the UK’s oldest sight loss charity. We want you to use your business skills to turn £500 into as much money as you can!

The challenge is to raise as much money as possible for Henshaws from a starting investment of £500, in three
months and will culminate in an awards dinner in January 2012, where the winners will be announced.

In the past we’ve had companies holding Pimms afternoons, setting up tuck shops, holding auctions, and even setting up a wine tasting club.   As long as your idea is legal, ethical and moral, there are no limits.  You will be competing against other businesses so give it your all! The more creative and entrepreneurial your idea the better.

How it works:

  • Your Company signs up as a team to the 500 Challenge.  There will be no restriction in the number of team members and your company can have more than one team (Which always encourages some healthy competition!)
  •  If required, Henshaws will make available £500 to your business to kick-start your 500 Challenge and maximise money making opportunities, the team then decides when they want their three month challenge to begin.
  • During the challenge the team will raise as much money as they can, using the £500 to invest as creatively and as wisely as possible (fundraising methods must be legal, ethical and moral).
  • During January 2012 Henshaws will host the 500 Challenge Awards dinner at a prestigious Manchester hotel. All challenge teams will be invited to attend and be eligible for priority tickets.

Why work with Henshaws?

As well as being an exciting opportunity to play a part in the work of Henshaws, we can help you achieve your business and CSR objectives.

Some of the benefits to your business

  • Positive PR coverage and increased brand awareness
  • Positive positioning of your brand to key audiences
  • Additional marketing routes for your brand

Helping Henshaws Campaign to raise £50k

Oscar for Advertiser campaignThe Advertiser newspaper has launched a fantastic new campaign on our behalf, which hopes to raise £50k to support our services, primarily the patient support service at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

The campaign has been launched featuring the story of Oscar O’Sullivan, who attends our parents and toddler group with his mum Kait.  Oscar has a rare genetic defect Lebers Congenital Amaurosis and has used a cane since he’s been able to walk.

Kait’s said of her experience with Henshaws, “It was only when we accessed the Henshaws service at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital that we were able to understand and to learn to deal with his condition.”

We’re delighted that Kait and Oscar’s dad Anthony were willing to share their experiences to help launch the appeal and we hope that as well as raising vital funds for our services, the campaign raises awareness of visual impairment.

Carols by Candlelight concert a sucess

Mike Newman at Carol ConcertThree-time Guinness Blind Land Speed record holder, Mike Newman, celebrated Christmas with us on Friday the 10th of December at another inspiring Carols by Candlelight concert at Manchester Cathedral.

With over 500 people in attendance and £2500 raised, the concert was a great success.  The event featured performances from super talented young musicians from Chetham’s School of Music, a musical nativity performance from Loreto prep school and a beautiful vocal performance from Jessica Bennett, who is also a Henshaws volunteer.  And thanks to Rebecca Paris Management for arranging a performance by the young female soprano vocalist Georgia Odette at the last minute, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed!

The evening also included touching readings from Maria Philips, and Lillian Juma of Henshaws, as well as a moving speech from Mike Newman, three-time Guinness Blind Land Speed record holder.  He spoke of his experiences, and shared stories of his land speed record attempts and said of the event,

“The evening was a great success and I enjoyed it immensely, Henshaws has such a positive impact on people, both to help them re-build their lives and to enable them to take pride in things they do and I was honoured to be asked to speak at this years Carol’s by Candlelight concert”

At the end of the Concert the candles were lit and the final hymn was sung by candlelight.  Many people commented on what a lovely evening they’d had, everyone left with a smile and filled with Christmas spirit (not to mention mince pies!) and we are delighted to have raised money to help continue to provide our life changing services.

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped to make this an evening to remember.

Your scrap can raise cash!

Your scrap can raise cash!

 Giveacar

The unwanted car rusting in your drive could raise much-needed funds for Henshaws. Old cars that are often dumped or cherry picked for parts by unlicensed traders can be recycled in an environmentally-friendly way to raise valuable funds for Henshaws. If you have any unwanted vehicle and would like to donate it to charity at no cost to you, read on!

To support our work Henshaws has partnered up with Giveacar, a social enterprise that can pick up any vehicle, from anywhere in the UK, completely for free. They then arrange the scrap or the auction of the vehicle, and the profits go to your chosen registered charity.

Nick Marr, Group CEO at Henshaws says:

“Henshaw’s partnership with Giveacar is a great, easy way to help us raise more funds to support our valuable services. Telling your friends and family about this amazing new scheme will help us to make a huge difference – in the first week we were on the site we were donated a car worth £107!”

Tom Chance, CEO of Giveacar, says:
“Our service has a dual function, to help preserve the environment and to raise money for charities. The DVLA reports that 2 million cars are taken off the road, yet only 1 million cars are disposed of at an authorised treatment facility. At Giveacar, we only use authorised facilities that recycle a minimum of 85% of the weight of your vehicle.”

So why not donate your unwanted car to Henshaws today? To get more details and start making a difference, visit http://www.giveacar.co.uk or call the Giveacar Team on 020 0011 1664, quoting Henshaws as your chosen charity. It won’t cost you a penny.

Christmas Carol Concert

Carols by Candlelight

10th December, 7.30pm

Carols by CandlelightPlans for this year’s Carol Concert are in full swing as we prepare for the upcoming event at Manchester Cathedral on 10th December, at 7.30pm.

The cathedral welcomes back super talented young musicians from Chetham’s School of Music, performing on piano, harp and flute. The Henshaws Hot-Spots are making their annual trek from Knaresborough to wow the congregation with their musical talents, proving once again that disability is no barrier to superb musical performance.

But all this wouldn’t be anything without the biggest performers of the night – the audience. It’s a perfect setting to belt out those favorite Christmas carols in an enchanting candle-lit Cathedral.

Sue Nicholls, supporter of Henshaws said, “Henshaws Carol Concert always seems to start off that lovely ‘Christmas is coming’ feeling. The talent of the performers is second to none and I’m proud to support them to help more blind and sight impaired people in the local area.”

Tickets £10 adults and £5 concessions. Mince pies and refreshments will be available on the night.

For tickets, or if you're interested in volunteering on the night, please contact 0161 786 3661 or email tori.moore@henshaws.org.uk.

In a long life that spanned the reign of four Monarchs Margaret, also know to many as Peggy, experienced both happiness and great personal tragedy, but regardless of whatever life put in front of her she remained a strong, determined and caring person who showed great sensitivity and compassion to those around her.

The Wolstencrofts: left to right, Margaret, Fred, Sarah Ellen and RobertBorn in Manchester on the 13th of May 1913, Margaret lived the first 26 years of her life in Sedgely Park, Prestwich with her parents, grandmother and two younger brothers Robert and Fred. In September 1920, their father Fred, died, and Sarah Ellen Wolstencroft was left to raise their three children alone. As a professional singer with the Carl Rosa Opera Company Sarah Ellen toured the country and consequently the children were inevitably sent away to boarding school, in Margaret’s case to the Crossleys School in Yorkshire at the age of ten.

As she herself was later to say, this was not a happy time in her life and Margaret suffered terribly from homesickness, missing family life with her mother and her brothers greatly. Soon after leaving school at 16 Margaret was offered a post at Schofield Insurance Brokers, where she was to spend the next 44 years.

Early in 1939 the family moved to a new house in Beeston Avenue, Timperley, which was to become Margaret’s home for the next 70 years. By this time her brother Fred had become very ill with Leukaemia and both Margaret and her mother nursed him until his death, at the age of 23, in August of that year. Tragedy was to strike the family again when her other brother Robert, who was serving with the Royal Artillery, was killed on active service in May of 1944. Margaret was a great comfort to her grieving mother in the years to come and when in turn she fell ill it was Margaret who nursed her until her death in 1955.

Despite the loss of her parents and siblings Margret always kept in touch with her wider family and for many years she and her cousin Richard, who also never married, became close friends, enjoying many adventures on their travels around the world. Richard, who had been born with impaired vision, became less able to care for himself at is home in London and he moved to Timperley in the 1980’s where Margaret was able to look after him. The two of them enjoyed many happy times during this period and were often to be seen walking and cycling around the Cheshire countryside. In the 1990’s Richard’s health began to deteriorate and once again Margaret selfless nature came to the fore and she cared for him at home until his death in 1995.

Like her mother Margaret had a passion for music and she had a longstanding love of the Theatre and the Opera, as well as being an active member of a local music group. As well as being a great supporter of the Conservative Party (she sat on the local party committee), Margaret was also an enthusiastic member of the Church Ladies Association and the National Trust.

In later years she weathered a number of health setbacks and suffered from both vision and hearing impairments, and in late 2008 she left the house that had been her home for nearly 70 years and moved into a retirement home in Mobberley. Margaret died quietly in her sleep on February 17 2009 and although she had only been living at the Home for a comparatively short time she had made a great impression on staff and fellow residents alike, making a number of new friends and taking an active part in the social life at the home. She had especially taken great delight in the grand piano there, played regularly for the residents, which reminded her of happy times in her youth when her mother would play in the family home for family and friends.

Tom Clark, Henshaws Legacies Manager, said: “I had the honour of meeting Margaret personally on a number of occasions, she was a lovely lady and a long time supporter of Henshaws Society for Blind People. Charities such as ours rely on the selfless generosity of people like Margaret, who throughout her own life repeatedly went to great lengths to care for others. Now, even though she has passed on, with this bequest she has ensured that the spirit in which she has lived her life is reflected in the legacy she has left to the world. Because of this wonderful lady local blind and visually impaired people will continue to receive high quality help and assistance from Henshaws to cope with and overcome their visual impairment.”

Margaret’s friend Elaine Woods said: “When Margaret’s cousin Richard died he left her part of his estate and it was his wish that in life she used this legacy for her own use, but thereafter that she in turn would leave it to a good cause for helping Blind People, as Richard himself had impaired vision from birth and knew himself the handicaps that this imposed. I knew Richard myself and so at the moment I feel very close to both of them because I feel we have carried out what they both wanted with this bequest to Henshaws.”

Solicitor makes a splash for Henshaws

Trafford solicitor makes splash for Henshaws

Chris Partington Local solicitor Chris Partington aims to make a splash for Henshaws this October by circumnavigating the historic 120 mile long Cheshire Ring canal circuit by canoe.

Trafford resident Chris, who has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, completed the National 3-Peaks Challenge and cycled across the UK in a day, is mounting his latest out of the ordinary challenge to raise money for Henshaws Society for Blind People in Greater Manchester.

British Waterways measure it as a 120 mile circuit with 92 locks, 2 aqueducts and 4 tunnels and the scenery varies from the leafy green of the Peak Forest, through to the vibrant cityscape of central Manchester and the industrial archaeology of the cotton, coal and manufacturing industry’s the canals were built to serve.

The start and end point will be the Bridgewater Canal at the Kings Ransom pub in Sale, Cheshire with the route going clockwise. Paddling starts at 9.00am on the 15th October and the challenge is to be back at the Kings Ransom by 7.00pm on Sunday the 17th October for a much needed pint.

Chris said: “I’m always up for a challenge and I’m looking forward to three days out of the office and on the canals. And I’m delighted to be supporting a long standing local charity like Henshaws. The firm I work for, Slater Heelis, handled the Will of their founder Thomas Henshaw back in the 1830’s, in which he left a substantial sum to establish Henshaws Society for Blind People and we have a long history of supporting the charity. I know first hand what a fantastic job they do as my niece Beth was born visually impaired. Their support and guidance was a massive help, which is why I try to raise as much money as I can to help them continue their good work.”

Tom Clark, Henshaws Legacies Manger said: “The effort that Chris is putting in to raise this money for us is outstanding and everyone here at Henshaws really does appreciate it. He’s already raised over £9,000 for us and for him to volunteer to canoe for three solid days over 120 miles really does count as going above and beyond the call of duty and he’s going to be digging deep into his fitness reserves to meet this challenge. I just hope people dig just as deep into their pockets to support this superb effort.”

Henshaws Society for Blind people gives expert care, advice and training to local people affected by all kinds of visual impairment allowing them to build the skills and independence they need to get the future they want.

Salford lady celebrates 102nd birthday at Henshaws

Salford lady celebrates 102nd birthday at Henshaws

01 September 2010

Betty Lowe raises a glass at Henshaws on her 102nd birthdayOne of the most senior of the regions citizens, Miss Betty Lowe, celebrated her 102nd birthday at Henshaws Society for Blind People in Manchester last week. Betty, who still finds time to volunteer one day a week for the WRVS at Salford hospital, was awarded the MBE in 1998 for her outstanding contribution to local charities over the last forty years.

Born into the last years of Edwardian Britain Betty has seen 19 prime ministers, two world wars and five monarchs come and go during her long life; not bad when you consider she was considered a sickly child and had to attend an open air school when she was young.

She went on to defy early worries about her health by joining the Girl Guides in 1919. Betty said: “I've been in the guides since I was 11. I was very interested in it and I used to go camping and walking all the time. I was a bit of an outdoor girl when I was younger.”

She progressed to being a guide leader, where she introduced hundreds of girls to the organisation, running events and annual camping trips and she is still a member of the Trefoil Guild and an active supporter of the Guides.

A Salfordian born and bred, Betty served as an ARP warden during the Second World War and in the post war period worked for Crown Paints for many years.

Betty started coming to Henshaws in the late 1990’s when she began to lose her sight. She said: “It’s a very friendly place and the people at Henshaws have always been very welcoming. I enjoy the social side of coming in to the centre and like to catch up with my friends in the social group.”

Keeping active has always been important to Betty and she maintains that has played an important part in her longevity, along with having a wide range of interests.

She said: “ Keep yourself moving, keep busy and active, that’s the key to a long and happy life.”

True to her word Betty made the cakes for her birthday celebration at Henshaws, which went down very well with staff and service users alike.

Kind hearted expats raise money for blind and visually impaired people in Merseyside

L-R Donna Hall, Nikki Andrews, Jonathan Wood,Angela Wood, Tracy Burrows Jeff Wood

Charitable Expat project manager, Jonathon Wood, came into Henshaws Society for Blind people in Liverpool last week and presented the Society with a much appreciated cheque for £3,124.

Jonathon, a project manager with BAE Systems, coordinated the fundraising effort among the expatriate community in Saudi Arabia. Over a three month period kind hearted Liverpool FC fans in the unofficial Riyadh Reds supporters club raised more than a £1,000 for Henshaws and more than £2,000 was raised by the staff and parents of the children at the Salwa Garden Village nursery school, “The Secret Garden”.

Fundraising at the expat nursery was coordinated by Karen Hunter and staff have worked tirelessly over the last three months, organising fundraising events, holding raffles and baking cakes, and their efforts cumulated in a sponsored ‘Toddle Waddle’ where toddlers at the school waddled in fancy dress for charity around the school playing field.

Jonathon, whose spent the last 10 years in Saudi Arabia, is originally from Bottle, was inspired to help after seeing the work Henshaws does in the community first hand: “My nephew Dylan gets a lot of support from Henshaws and after seeing him appear on the front of one of their booklets I was prompted to get off my backside and raise some money for the Society.”

It was a day of double celebration for Jonathon and his family as earlier in the day he had been awarded his Masters degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Liverpool.

“It was a particularly special day for my family and I, as l attended my Masters Graduation ceremony at the University of Liverpool after visiting Henshaws in the morning. It was great to meet some of the Henshaws team, see the facilities and most importantly, hand over the fundraising cheque.

As a local lad, who unfortunately doesn’t get home much these days, it was a day I’ll always remember, and it made me just as proud to have helped raise awareness of Henshaws as it did to attend my graduation ceremony.”

Bill Milner, Merseyside area manager for Henshaws Society for Blind People said: “Henshaws is all about improving the lives of local blind and visually impaired people and their families and it’s lovely to see extended families pitching in to raise money like this. Its really appreciated when people like Jonathon and the Expat community in Saudi Arabia go to such lengths to put something back into their local community back home, and we’ll be putting the money they’ve raised for us to good use at our centre in Liverpool.”

Henshaws Society for Blind People works in the North of England, enabling people with visual impairments and other disabilities to build the skills and independence they need so they can have the future they want.

Henshaws July – 2010

The pupils of William Hulme's Grammar School, on Spring Bridge Road in Manchester, have raised nearly two thousand pounds for charity over the last school year. Students have been busy raising cash through a variety of events, including non uniform days, talent shows, concerts and a Valentine’s ball.

Warren Moore, head pupil at the successful Manchester academy presented Morris Loveland, a long standing volunteer for Henshaws Society for Blind People and former head teacher at the School, and Liz Greenwood, fundraising officer for St Anne’s Hospice, with cheques for £967.

Peter Booth, head of fundraising for Henshaws said: ‘Sometime people in our society are a little too quick to believe the worst about our young people. The pupils of William Hulme's School demonstrate that kindness, commitment and generosity of spirit are very much alive and well in the next generation. There efforts over the last year have been an inspiration to people of all ages and they, their parents and their school should be proud of what they’ve achieved.

The award winning William Hulme's Grammar School has been one of Manchester leading schools, since its foundation in 1887.

Free film club for the visually impaired up and running at Henshaws Greater Manchester

Henshaws film club

Henshaws - July 2010

A new free film club for blind and visually impaired citizens of Greater Manchester is now up and running and proving to be a popular attraction. The club, created by local charity Henshaws Society for Blind People, meets regularly at the Henshaws centre in Old Trafford, and is one of a number of social activities run by the Society, designed to broaden access into mainstream culture for blind and visually impaired people.

Mark Belcher, Community Services Manager at Henshaws told us: “Going to the pictures is something we all take for granted, its part of our everyday lives. We talk about the latest films with friends and colleagues all the time and there’s nothing wrong with that, but a visually impaired person can sometimes feel a bit excluded by the whole thing. For our country’s two million strong visually impaired community, including the 4% of who have no sight at all, technologies such as audio description are of enormous help in reducing that sense of isolation.”

And volunteer group leader Mike Parsons said: “Henshaws film club uses the latest technology to provide superior sound quality for both the picture and the audio description service we use. We have a well stocked library drawn from a broad range of genres. The club has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and it’s a place where like minded people can not only enjoy a good film, but a brew and a natter as well!”

Film distributors and TV company’s are now legally obliged to ensure that at least 10% of their output comes with an audio description service, with Sky already pledging to improve on this target in the near future.

To find out more about Henshaws Film club call Henshaws Society for Blind People on 0161 872 1234.

Greater Manchester Police on the march for Henshaws

GMP walk for Henshaws 1GMP walk for Henshaws 3

A team of kind hearted Bobbies and support staff from Greater Manchester Police's Operational Communications Branch put their best feet forward this week as they took to the streets for a charity walking marathon in support of Henshaws society for blind people, on Wednesday the 9th of June.

The intrepid team of 10, including team mascot Diesel the dog who padded every step of the way alongside them, set out on their 26 mile walk at 4am from Wigan Police Station.

Making their way through Hindley, West Houghton, Walkden, Farnworth, Radcliffe and Prestwich the team arrived at Manchester Town Hall at 3pm where the Lord Mayor of Manchester treated them to a civic reception.

Braving the wind and the rain the group then set out on the final leg of their journey to GMP headquarters where comedians Bobby Ball (from Cannon and Ball) and Charlie Ale greeted the walkers at the finish line.

Maureen Carroll, organiser of the walk said: “We all take our sight for granted, and in the job that we do, we have a duty of care for vulnerable people who come into contact with us.

We have worked closely with the Henshaws Society for Blind over the last few months and the marathon gives us the opportunity to show our support and make our own contribution. It was tough, but we were determined to keep going, and it was all well worth it the end.”

Henshaws Community Fundraiser James Lester said: “This really is a fantastic contribution to supporting our work with blind and partially sited people in Greater Manchester. Everyone at Henshaws is very grateful indeed for the time and effort put in by these generous hearted walkers from the GMP.”

Skillstep to success reaches the semi-finals of the National Lottery Awards

Skillstep to Success

The free 12 week training course, delivered in partnership with Bolton College, was designed exclusively for blind and visually impaired people by one of the regions oldest local charities the Greater Manchester based Henshaws society for blind people.

Skillstep puts the Big Lottery Fund grant to good use by equipping visually impaired adults with the skills and self-belief they need to progress onto employment, training or voluntary work. Working to a modular system, students undertake confidence building exercises, as well as developing new assertive and interpersonal skills. On the practical side they also learn valuable new IT and vocational skills as well as completing a two-week work placement at the end of the course.

Mark Belcher, Community Services Manager at Henshaws Manchester said: “we’re really proud of what we’ve been able to achieve through Skillstep with the grant from the Big Lottery Fund. Not only have we been able to help local visually impaired people learn vital new skills we’ve also been able to give them a boost to their confidence, empowering them to take a variety of positive new steps in their lives”.

Aysha Ahmed of Eccles, herself a graduate of the course said: “leaning so many new skills, and finding out that there was help and support out there, helped give me the confidence to try new things. I completed the course at the end of last year, and since March I’ve actually been running an IT course of my own at Henshaws.”

Peter Rhodes, of Belle Vue Manchester said: “the course is equipping me with a whole new set of IT skills which are literally opening up new worlds for me through access to the internet.”

Catherine North, the Society’s Trusts and Grants coordinator said: “getting through to the semi-finals of the National Lottery Awards means a lot to us. It’s recognition that we’ve really tried to make the very most of our lottery grant, which has given us the ability to do so much more with the course, like supporting the end of course work placements with the necessary equipment and software. And by doing this Skillstep, with the support of the national lottery, isn’t just helping local visually impaired people, we’re also helping to change perceptions of visual impairment within the local community.”

The first round of public voting for the award runs form 1June to 18 June. People can vote either by visiting www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards or by phone on 0844 686 5384 (calls cost 5p from a BT landline) until midday on Friday 18 June. The three projects with the most votes in each category will go through to the final round of public voting.

Late registration for the Great North Swim 2010

Entry has officially closed for the British Gas Great North Swim but you can still grab a late charity registration with Henshaws Society for Blind People.

The UK’s premier outdoor swimming challenge was fully booked just six weeks after the event opened but we’ve still got 20 slots to give away.

The swim takes place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th of September in the stunning setting of Lake Windermere. All the money you raise will help to fund our vital services in Manchester and Liverpool.

We’re always looking for fundraisers so the sooner you sign up the sooner you can get focused on sponsorship and physical preparation.

Last year over 6,000 hardy souls took to one of Britain's most beautiful lakes for the swim and organisers expect more than 7,000 this year.

There’ll be full support on the day for beginners and athletes alike and swimmers of all levels are encouraged to come along for a shot at the one mile course.

Help will be on hand but entrants must be confident about swimming that mile, so it’s time to get down to the local pool and build your stamina. However, most people taking part won’t have swum outdoors before, so you won’t be alone if it’s your first time.

The event (which has been voted the 5th top open-water swim in the world) will also be shown on TV. Fame and glory await you – get involved!

If you're up for the challenge, contact:

Pete's finger's on the media pulse for Henshaws

We’re pleased to announce that Merseyside media personality, Pete Pinnington is lending his support to Henshaws by becoming an ambassador for our Merseyside centre.

Pete is a professional radio presenter with 20 years in the media industry. He presents two main shows on Cheshire’s Wire FM including the midweek ‘Home Run’ from 3-7pm and Saturday’s from 10am-2pm. And when he’s not doing that, he runs Pete Pinnington Presents, a full service event management company.

With his finger firmly on the local media pulse, Pete is now helping to raise awareness of Henshaws on his radio shows and is set to help us out at our larger events throughout the year.

Pete says he’s keen to help Henshaws for many reasons, partly because of the support our Liverpool team gave to his dad when he lost his sight back in the 1970s.

He remembers: “When my dad lost his sight, Henshaws stepped in to help. They did a wonderful job, helping dad to learn to adapt. It's a personal pleasure to be able to help and support the brilliant work that Henshaws does.”

Volunteers have a spring in their step

Volunteers Albert Leek and Sydney Percival joined a host of volunteers for our Salford Outreach spring party just before Easter.

Both Albert and Sydney have been volunteering for Henshaws for over 15 years and they accepted their Salford CVS certificates from the Mayor and Mayoress of the City of Salford, Councillor Roger Lightup and Valerie Fleet.

16 of our volunteers received certificates for their dedication to volunteering for Henshaws, but we made a fuss of Albert and Sydney because they celebrated their respective 85th and 83rd birthdays on the day of the party!

Braille class brilliance

The Braille class running at our Old Trafford centre is the only one of its kind in Manchester – and students say it's given them a new focus in life.

Pat Howie from Salford says, “I can now make simple things like labels for bottles of tablets. It doesn’t sound much, but to a blind person it gives you real peace of mind to know you are taking the right pill.”

It's given Tony Chorley from Eccles a new sense of independence and freedom too. “At first it was like going back to school. But now I can read Braille menus in restaurants without having to ask for help. I’m now more of my own man, just like everybody else.”

There are two types of Braille. Grade 1 is a basic alphabet where words are spelled out literally. A Harry Potter book printed in this basic Braille would amount to 12 volumes. Grade 2 is more advanced. Words are condensed and abbreviated, almost like ‘text-speak’. There are also new rules on grammar to learn.

Braille tutor, Gary Cassidy says, “I’m proud of how much the group has achieved. It is a confidence boost for them and now some students are progressing to job skills training. Learning Braille can open all sorts of doors for blind people.”

Haircuts are a snip in Liverpool

Our service users in Liverpool have the best bobs and barnets in town these days, all thanks to Mode Hairdressing Training Ltd.

Mode Hairdressing, based at the Queen’s Dock Commercial Centre, is offering cuts, colour, blow dry and restyles to anyone with a visual impairment, completely free of charge.

Linda Corness from our Liverpool centre said, “A lot of blind and sight-impaired people tell us how important it is to them to look good, so this relationship is just perfect.”

The free styling service is offered once a month on a Wednesday afternoon.

Debbie Tagoe from Mode Haidressing says, “Henshaws is close to our hearts, so it made sense that we helped in the way we know best. A few of us did jump out of a plane to raise money for Henshaws last year, but I’ll be the first to say, we’re far better at doing hair!”

Anyone with a visual impairment who wants to take advantage of the free styling service should contact Linda on 0151 227 1226.

More 'Ways of Seeing'

Margaret Wilson enjoying the artworkIf you missed Eric Fong's 'Ways of Seeing' art installation in Manchester and London last year, then never fear – you can now watch it online.

Three visually impaired art enthusiasts from our Manchester based Art Galleries and Museums Group collaborated with renowned artist Eric Fong to raise awareness of issues relating to art and visual impairments.

'Ways of Seeing' was shown at Manchester's Chinese Arts Centre from January to April 2009, and then moved to London's APT Gallery in the summer.

The exhibition featured a short film documenting the experiences of Mai Ling Wong, Christine Gregory and her guide dog Shane, Margaret Wilson and their audio describer, Anne Hornsby, visiting an art exhibition at Manchester's Whitworth Art Gallery.

Eric said: “The project explored how visual impairment affects access to art and examines the gap between seeing, hearing and understanding.”

Take a look at the film, and find out more about Mai Ling, Christine, Margaret (and Shane!) are able to enjoy the visual arts.

£1009 for 1009 miles!

George Mills at John O'GroatsHenshaws got a wonderful new year's surprise when a cheque for £1009 landed on our doorstep this week.

Keen cyclist George Mills, 64, cycled 1009 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats – and was sponsored £1 for every mile.

George said, “Land's End to John O'Groats is the Holy Grail for cyclists – so when I retired in May I decided to do it. I know Henshaws from way back when I was a kid growing up in Salford, so I like to support them.”

George, from Withington, raced in his youth.  Over the last thirteen years he has completed a number of sponsored bike rides for Henshaws, including Manchester to Blackpool and the Manchester 100, and has raised over £1180 from his previous endeavours.  All George's sponsorship money goes towards keeping Henshaws vital North West services operating.

Thanks George – and here's to your next challenge!

If you would like to take part in a challenge for Henshaws in 2010, visit our runs and challenges page.

Party time at Gulliver's World

Fun in the snow at Gulliver's World

The rain didn’t dampen spirits at our North West Children and Family Service Christmas party last Sunday.

Over 150 visually impaired children and young people enjoyed a fun filled Christmas party with their families at Warrington’s Gulliver’s World.

Over 280 people in total attended the party, which was part funded by a kind donation from Morson International.  Children aged from babies through to teenagers joined in the fun.

Families who use the service in Greater Manchester and Merseyside enjoyed a day of rides, games and good food – and of course a visit to Santa who gave them all a Christmas gift!

Linda Hoburn, Children and Families Support Officer, said, “The weather might have been miserable but it did nothing to dampen the families’ spirits.  The party is such a great way to finish a year of fantastic events for the children we work with.”

It is the first time that the party has been hosted by Gulliver’s World – and the first time that Manchester and Merseyside have joined together to host the event.

Children and Families Support Officer Elaine Stewart added, “It’s also a great event for the parents, who get a chance to meet new people from our other areas and share support and tips.  Parenting a visually impaired child, or if you have a visual impairment yourself, can be tough.”

Touch tour highlight of '09

Touch tour at Victoria Baths

Henshaws' visit to Manchester's famed Victoria Baths was named as one of the attraction's highlights of 2009.

Our Art Galleries and Museums Group visited the site, which was the winner of the BBC2 Restoration series, in September.  The group had a full tour with a touching and handling session, and audio description by Anne Hornsby.

The group were able to touch the Victorian tiles and stained glass.  They listened to the soundtrack of an old TV film about the Baths and local people’s reminiscences on CD and podcast.

Volunteer Group Leader Mary Gifford said, “The people at the Baths were fantastically welcoming and were very pleased with the visit.  My Group raved about it!”

The group visit exhibitions and sites of interest across the North West on monthly visits.  If you would like more information about the group, please contact us on 0161 872 1234.

IT venue needed!

IT training in actionWe're on the hunt for a Manchester city centre venue to host a new IT course.

We have funding for laptops, wireless internet and course materials but we cannot afford to hire a city centre venue.

All we need is use of a room with tables and chairs once a week – there will be six students on the course.  To enable the students to get there easily and safely, it is preferable that the venue is close to bus, train or Metrolink routes.

Community Services Manager Mark Belcher said, “90% of employers view people with a visual impairment as ‘impossible’ to employ.  Our course provides people with the first steps people need on the road to employment or further training – and dispels a lot of the myths about visual impairment that are out there.”

We already provide pioneering IT training in communities across Merseyside.

We will give any company that are able to offer a room free visual impairment training for their staff.

If you are able to help, or would like further information, please contact Mark Belcher on 0161 872 1234 or mark.belcher@henshaws.org.uk.

New home visits service

We’ve started a new home care visiting service in Old Trafford and Salford, helping local older people live more independently.

3.5 million older people in the UK live alone. Many are far from their families and over a quarter say they do not have a best friend. They often face worsening health, mobility problems and low income too.

But imagine if you had all this to cope with - and your eyesight is failing too.

With sight loss, the day-to-day activities you once took for granted become a huge struggle. The long days of loneliness can lead to real despair.

We don’t believe anyone with sight loss should have to face a future like this.

That’s why our new service volunteers visit older people in Trafford each week and help with tasks like dealing with correspondence, finances, healthy eating and keeping a safe and clean home. They also advise on techniques for making life easier such as using large print writing or tactile markings on bottles.

Our volunteers accompany the person on public transport so they can get their shopping, visit friends, go to the library, or pursue their interests.

These home visits are a lifeline to those living alone. Sadly local authorities struggle to provide this kind of care, and many blind and partially sighted older people have never had a visit from social services.

We rely on the kindness of our donors to fund this service. The cost of recruiting and training our volunteers works out at £25 per home visit.

Can you help us today? Anything you can spare will make a huge difference.

Janet's inspirational trek

Henshaws supporters Mike and Janet Salt, from Marple Bridge, planned to be the first visually impaired couple to walk the Great Wall of China.

Sadly, Mike passed away in January – but Janet is determined to complete the trek in his name, raise vital funds for Henshaws and be the first deaf blind woman to undertake the challenge.

Accompanying her will be Glynis Howard, Henshaws Rehabilitation Manager, who will guide Janet on the trek.

Janet said, “We're doing this as a fundraising tribute to Mike, especially as he was looking forward to doing it. But Glynis has been a great companion and I'm so glad we're going together.”

Glynis, from Reddish, added, “It's an honour to walk with Janet on this trek. We've had a lot of fun training together and we're just hoping that the trek in China will be just as good.”

You can sponsor Janet and Glynis at www.justgiving.com/janetsaltchinatrek.

Triathlon triumph

Here at Henshaws we have a fantastic relationship with our neighbours at Greater Manchester Police.

Police constables Catherine Caulfield, John Bellamy and Stefan Winstanley swam, cycled and ran to raise £511 towards our work in the local area.

Chief Superintendent Janette McCormick, said: “A triathlon is a difficult physical challenge which requires strength, fitness and determination.  They have raised money for such a worthy cause.”

Henshaws community fundraiser, James Lester, added: “We are extremely grateful to the officers for taking part and helping us to raise these much needed funds.”

If you’ve been inspired by the officers to take on a challenge, give James a call on 0161 872 1234.
