We provide one to one training and support to people who use our Arts and Crafts Centre, and live in our community houses. We also support those who access our children’s services.
Our main role is to enable individuals to live as independently and safely as possible. The training covers mobility and orientation, independent living skills and communication skills.
Our range of specialist training programmes enables people with sight loss to live, travel and work independently and confidently. We always consider the needs and aspirations of the individual.
We assess people’s new skills through our ‘small steps to success’ programme.
I worked hard with the help of Vision Support Services. I learnt mobility routes, how to cook using a microwave and oven, health and safety awareness and how to look after my finances.
I now have the independence to move to supported housing. Vision Support Services were on hand to orientate me into my new surroundings and now I’m working on new routes in the local area, which will help me to join in local community activities.
When I volunteered at the cafe at the Arts and Crafts Centre I achieved an NVQ in hospitality. It really boosted my confidence and encouraged me to enrol on a course at Henshaws College. In 2 years I’ll have a BTEC qualification.
I also play cricket for the North Yorkshire Visually Impaired team and I now attend home matches and training sessions on my own.
The Henshaws Vision Support Team have enabled me to learn the route to the college and the cricket club using public transport. I can’t thank them enough - I’m meeting new people, I’m more confident and I’m playing cricket for Yorkshire. It doesn’t get much better than that!
