Audible Vision app review

Available on Android, this app uses Artificial Intelligence technology to help visually impaired people become confident in everyday tasks.

Audible Vision app-what is it?

This app uses Artificial Intelligence technology to help visually impaired people become confident in everyday tasks. Audible Vision is a new text reading app that is still under development but has been released in beta mode.

As well as reading out printed text, it comes with lots of other interesting and useful features.

The “Find Text” function also works really well, and the phone gives a really clear vibration and audible alarm when the word or words you are looking for is on the screen.

Features

Find text

This function will identify products or shops through their names. For example, if a user wants to find a specific medicine in a medical box; instead of reading all the text, the user can ask for a specific medicine name to be searched and the app will alert the user as soon as the camera is directed towards it.

Expiry date

Using this function will identify a probable expiry date on food products or medicines by holding the camera points insert product. As a user gets closer to the expiry date section the user will be notified by haptic feedback it will only give the results if that passes certain confidence in this reading.

Document

The app will also read long pieces of text or documents aloud. The text will also be displayed on the screen with a high contrast background and larger font to make it easier to read.

Mask detection

The app also has a feature which will identify if people in front of the camera are wearing masks or not.

Final thoughts..

This is one of the clearest and fastest text reading apps around. Like many other text reading apps, once opened it uses the phones camera to recognise and read out text and other things in the environment.

The buttons take up minimal space at the top of the screen and these are easily accessed by swiping left or right on the screen. The document reader is good; it scans text incredibly fast and is very accurate. as well as being read out, the text is displayed clearly in high contrast on the screen. This is impressive!

The “Find Text” function also works really well, and the phone gives a really clear vibration and audible alarm when the word or words you are looking for is on the screen. The mask detection function also works well. The app seemed to work well with most functions using Talkback however there were a few small glitches that needed debugging however the app is still in beta phase and I assume any difficulties will be resolved during this phase.

The expiry date function was successful in reading 3 out of 5 random items from my fridge, but the developers say that this function is experimental, and the app will not read out expiry dates if it feels the writing isn’t clear or enough to give an accurate reading.

This app is still in beta mode and is only available now on Android devices. The developers hope that it will be available on iOS devices in the future. It is currently free to use but comes with advertisements included. There will be a paid for version available if you want to get rid of the adverts.

This looks like a good addition to the wide selection of text reading apps currently available.
