Local Community Garden Appeal

Our Arts & Crafts Centre in Knaresborough is a community hub where, through our workshops, people living with a range of disabilities discover their talents, put them into practice and realise their full potential. We're raising funds towards the development of the centre's garden; a unique, safe and multi-sensory space where everyone is welcome to discover hidden corners of works of art, water features, scented plants and wildlife.

Sam's story

Sam Taylor has been coming to Henshaws ACC for the past ten years, and particularly loves our Horticulture Workshop. Sam is registered blind, and has mild learning disabilities.

Jack has been volunteering with Sam for the past 10 years, and every week the two friends walk round the garden to explore the unique space. Sam says: “Jack and I share all the different smells and noises in the garden. As I don’t have any sight, Jack describes the plants and sculptures to me. Because the garden always changes, our walks are different each time.”

Unfortunately, the garden’s paths are becoming inaccessible for local nature lovers like Sam. This is why we are raising money to renovate the garden to ensure it is accessible, multi-sensory and a safe refuge for everyone in the Yorkshire community.

When I’m in the gardens I feel relaxed and at ease. I love hearing the birds as it relaxes me straight away. I find it very peaceful. I feel like part of my local community here and it’s made a big difference to my life. If I wasn’t here I would be stuck at home."
