You may have heard people in the visual impairment community talking about the Meta Glasses: mainstream AI smart glasses that also have benefits for people with sight loss. What are they, and what exactly are those benefits?
This resource will give a deep-dive into the Meta Glasses: what they are, what features they offer, and some pros and cons. You’ll also hear from Meta Glasses users with sight loss. They talk about what they like about the glasses and how they use them.
If you have the Meta Glasses already, you may be wanting to learn more. If you haven’t got the Meta Glasses, this should help you make an informed decision regarding whether these glasses are for you.
This is not an advertisement for the Meta Glasses. This is just us giving an overview of a product that’s popular and well talked about amongst blind people.
What are the Meta Glasses?
The Meta Glasses are AI-powered smart glasses that allow you to perform many functions hands-free thanks to a built-in camera, microphone and speakers. Think of them as being like any glasses, but with tech built in.
You can choose from different lens options and styles, to suit your needs and fit. Whether you want clear lenses, tinted lenses, or photochromic lenses that adapt to light (transitions® lenses), there are many options available. If you wear prescription lenses, you can purchase them with prescription lenses.
There are two brands of Meta Glasses: Ray Ban Meta and Oakley Meta. Ray Ban Meta Glasses are like everyday glasses, and support prescription lenses. Oakley Meta are more rugged and are for sports and outdoor environments. Oakley Meta Glasses don’t support prescription lenses.
All Meta Glasses feature a camera, microphone, and two open-ear stereo speakers. There’s also the capture button, on/off switch and touchpad for accessing the glasses’ functions. More on that below.
What can the Meta Glasses do?
The Meta Glasses connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can then use them to take photos and record videos, listen to music and other audio, make video calls to family and friends, read incoming messages, and even obtain descriptions of your surroundings (more on that below).
Meta AI powers many functions of the glasses. You will need the Meta AI app to pair the glasses to your phone and set them up. The Meta AI app will guide you through the set-up process, including helping you link compatible apps and services.
To pair the glasses to your phone, the glasses must be in the case that comes with the glasses. If using the glasses for the first time, they should enter pairing mode automatically when the case is open. If not, you can manually enter pairing mode by holding down the button on the case for five seconds.
The pairing button on the case is circular in shape but may be difficult to locate as it isn’t the most tactile. If you’re struggling to locate it, find the USB-C port on the edge of the case. The pairing button is near to the USB-C port, on the side of the case that doesn’t feature the flap to open and close it.
Once you’ve completed the pairing process, you’re ready to start using them. It’s best to have Meta AI open (it can be in the background) for the glasses to function properly. For you to get the most out of them, the glasses must be in Bluetooth range of your phone. Your phone also needs to have a good internet connection, whether that’s over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
You control the glasses using touch commands and your voice. If using voice commands, in order to get the glasses to listen to you, you need to say ‘Hey Meta’ or ‘okay Meta.’ There is a setting you can enable so that when you say Hey Meta or Okay Meta, the glasses will make a sound to confirm they’re listening to you.
On the right-hand side of the glasses, near the hinge, there is a capture button. You use this to take photos and videos, and also to transfer video streaming from your phone to the glasses vice versa when using apps like WhatsApp. On the inside of the left arm, there is a slider switch. This is for turning the glasses on and off.
The touchpad is used for tasks including playing and pausing audio, answering and ending calls, and adjusting the volume. The touchpad is on the right-hand arm.
