Understanding the Challenge

Like other transaction machines, vending machines can pose challenges for those with sight loss.

Using Residual Vision and Technology

Martin explains that with some residual vision, which he humorously mentions using loosely, he relies on his phone’s camera to assist him. By using the camera, he can locate and identify the number corresponding to the item he wishes to purchase. The camera also helps in locating components like the card reader and selection buttons.

Practical demonstration

He demonstrates how this method works in a real-world scenario. After identifying the desired item and the action buttons with his phone, he successfully makes his selection and enjoys a hot chocolate.

Empowering Independence

Martin emphasises that using the camera as an aid allows him to use his phone as his eyes, maintaining his independence. This video highlights the importance of utilising technology and the to overcome daily challenges.
