“I love meeting different people and finding out what makes them dance”.

Here at Henshaws, we love discovering people's hidden talents. Take Lee from our supported living service who simply loves his music and is now our resident DJ at our Arts & Crafts centre in Knaresborough. He loves the newfound confidence this brings as well as getting people up and dancing!

I use Henshaws Supported Living Service, and when staff there found out how much I loved music, I was invited to DJ at a disco. It was such a success that they offered me another disco.

I spin the decks at both the Stay up Late and the Disco Fever
nights at the Arts & Crafts Centre, and I love what I do. For each disco I write down songs I think the crowd will like, and then compose a playlist. My mixing decks connect to a laptop and speakers, with flashing coloured lights, and standing lights that spin when the music plays. I love to use these on a night, as they pattern the floor and ceiling. It gives me a real buzz to see people having a great time dancing, and loving the music I’ve chosen.Photo of Lee DJing at the Arts and Crafts centre

Being a DJ has also given me a lot of confidence in myself. Using my microphone to introduce songs and get the crowd going is great, knowing that I’ve chosen the songs to get them dancing and make their night fun.

Discos at the Arts & Crafts Centre are particularly special to me, as they’re all inclusive. The nights are a lot of fun – there’s usually entertainment alongside the disco, like mini massages or facepainting. I’m partially sighted and have a learning disability, and people who attend have a range of disabilities, but with one thing in common – a desire to move to the music! I will choose songs with a strong beat, and pop music always gets people on the floor!

I learnt to DJ originally at Henshaws College, and music has been so important to me throughout my life. I’ve been doing discos a long time now, and have recently started to do discos for hire and private parties too. I think I’ll always be a DJ. I love meeting different people and finding out what makes them want to dance.”
