In this video Chris shares his inspiring story of living with total blindness caused by toxoplasmosis. He recalls waking up one Sunday with blurred vision, which quickly progressed, leaving him completely blind within four weeks. The most challenging aspect of his journey was the severe anxiety he experienced a year after losing his sight, leading to panic attacks, nausea, and sleep disturbances.

Supported by his family and determination, Chris sought help through counselling and medication, which proved effective in managing his anxiety. While the initial stages of blindness impacted every aspect of his life, Chris adapted over time, likening it to caring for a young toddler due to the careful consideration required in daily activities and social interactions.

His blindness led to significant life changes, including giving up his job in the automotive industry and his hobbies like motorcycling and flying. However, he discovered a new passion for woodturning, inspired by his love for horror films. Through dedication, self-belief, and countless hours of practice, Chris became a registered professional turner, earning the distinction of being the first-ever blind person to achieve this title.

Despite his accomplishments, Chris highlights the prevalent misconceptions and prejudices faced by visually impaired individuals. He aims to challenge such attitudes by motivating and inspiring others, not just within the visually impaired community, but people from all walks of life.

Chris encourages those recently diagnosed with visual impairment to never give up and surround themselves with a supportive network of friends and family. He emphasises the diverse range of emotions that come with blindness, acknowledging the difficulties while also recognising the potential for heartwarming moments and life-changing friendships.
