“OUTSTANDING” Mark for North Yorkshire Specialist College Henshaws
The College had been rated as “Requires Improvement” after an inspection at the end of 2018.
Principal Adrian Sugden, who took over the reins in January 2019, said: “We are absolutely delighted that our work has now won this recognition from the CQC. The new ratings are testament to the skills and dedication of our team who worked very hard to ensure the issues identified in the last report were addressed quickly and effectively.”
The CQC assessed the College on five criteria: Was the service safe; was the service effective; was the service caring; was the service responsive and was the service well-led?
Henshaws was rated good in every category, apart from responsiveness of the service which was deemed “outstanding”. This meant that services were tailored to meet the needs of individuals and delivered to ensure flexibility, choice and continuity of care.
The report outlined how students became involved in lots of activities and led fun and fulfilled lives. Young people with very complex needs had achieved goals for the first time, including sailing, kayaking and rock climbing. They had the opportunity to try new things, their individual needs were met and there was excellent support in place to assist their transition from college through personalised programmes. Personalised care ensured students had choice and control to meet their needs and preferences.
Adrian Sugden added: “Since our last inspection, we have registered to provide nursing care and we currently have 20 young people receiving that. This was our first inspection since the introduction of the healthcare provision so we are very pleased its success has been recognised from the outset.”
