Henshaws’ Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough is full of vibrant creativity and big imaginations. Our inclusive, accessible hub is a place where art meets compassion, bringing together visually impaired and disabled adults in a setting full of inspiration, talent, and friendship. Our wonderful Artmakers spend their days with us engaging in workshops and community life, discovering joy in artistic expression while making meaningful connections.

At Henshaws, we know that art isn’t just about making things, but is also a powerful way to build confidence, independence, and important social connections. At our Arts and Crafts Centre, our creative workshops are an opportunity for self-expression, reducing isolation and enhancing wellbeing.

We offer a safe, welcoming space designed to be completely accessible. Facilities include multi-sensory experiences, such as a specialist room with mood lighting, bubbles, cosy seating, and a relaxing craft zone, perfect for immersive, calming activities that are mindful of sensory needs. Through art, participants find their voice, explore creativity, and gain independence in a supportive environment.

Different Types of Crafts Offered at Henshaws

Henshaws offers an impressively diverse menu of creative programmes, each tailored to the interests and abilities of its Henshaws offers a huge range of creative workshops, each tailored to the interests and abilities of its Artmakers:

  • Ceramics Workshop – Mould clay into pottery or sculpture, developing fine motor skills and artistic flair.
  • Horticulture Workshop – Get back to nature by growing and tending to plants; a focus on hands-on engagement.
  • Jewellery & More Workshop – Craft bespoke pieces, exploring textures and beads to create wearable art.
  • Mosaic Workshop – Create intricate patterns and colourful images using tiles and glass, helping with both focus and meditative creativity.
  • Music Workshop – Express through rhythm, sound, and performance, perfect for connecting creatively beyond the visual.
  • Paper Workshop – Explore papercraft, collage, and texture; an accessible medium for a wide range of physical abilities.
  • Performing Arts Workshop – Engage in drama, movement, voice, and storytelling, building confidence in self-expression.
  • Print Workshop – Using techniques like linocut and printmaking, this is a tactile, visually engaging craft.
  • Retail Workshop – Learn about presentation, sales, and product design, gaining valuable skills for future use.
  • Sensory Arts Workshop – Designed to engage multiple senses, with textures, sounds, lights, and materials that can be explored by touch or hearing.
  • Woodwork Workshop – Build confidence in handling tools and natural materials, crafting functional or decorative pieces.

Every Artmaker receives a personalised creative programme, crafted for their interests and abilities, offering both progression and personal fulfilment. Their work is frequently showcased, whether it be at exhibitions, in the café, or in the Handmade at Henshaws shop, providing a real sense of pride, recognition, and community impact.
