Dementia Awareness Week at Henshaws
We're playing our part in Dementia Awareness Week (14th-20th May), by raising awareness on the importance of eye health and vision support to those who have dementia.
Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, but awareness and understanding of the prevalence of sight loss in people with dementia remains low. Often eye health support can take a back seat and visual impairment remains hidden, but with the right support someone living with dementia and sight loss can feel more orientated and have an improved quality of life.
Henshaws want everyone to come together and take action. By uniting, we can raise awareness, offer help and understanding, improve care.
Throughout next week, we will be promoting our Dementia and Sight Loss programme in Liverpool. We will be sharing important information and transforming the centre into a memory zone, with tastes, smells and objects of the past, so make sure you drop into our centre on 10 Duke Street in Liverpool! Our social groups are getting involved too, with memory themed songs from our Music Group, an old fashion cakes fundraiser by our Tech Group, and even a themed ‘When I was a child’ stories by our Writers Group.
Over the coming months we will also be working with Everton In the Community, to deliver a ground breaking programme of activity designed to raise awareness of the signs of sight loss in people with dementia, help identify hidden sight loss and enable people to manage their sight loss to improve their quality of life. We will be posting the results of our work here – so watch this space!
Over in Greater Manchester, Henshaws Enablement Officer Claire has been working on dementia and sight loss awareness in Wigan, funded by Wigan Council’s The Deal, which includes awareness on spotting the signs of sight loss, creating a sight loss friendly environment, and the different technology available.

We can't do it without you
Henshaws rely on voluntary donations; our work just wouldn’t be possible without people like you. Your support empowers local people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities to increase their independence, achieve their dreams, and go beyond expectations.
