Henshaws Art Makers to lead workshops for the public

As part of our artmaker exhibition this July, some of our fabulous art makers will be sharing their skills with you and running a variety of creative workshops.

Sand Art with Hannah

I joined Henshaws roughly ten years ago and since then I have practiced as an artist in several different disciplines.

I began in the jewellery workshop where I made beautiful bracelets and wire art. I enjoy creating 3D art in the paper workshop, and I work in the Henshaws gift shop helping to promote the centre and events.

A Passion for Performamce

My main passion has become the performing arts when I joined the drama group 5 years ago. I have performed in Pantomimes and was proud to share my work at the Royal Hall in Harrogate.

I love reading to audiences and I love words and language. I have read publicly and am now learning Makaton signing; helping others to sign at the arts centre. I recently facilitated a signing session for a community theatre project at Harrogate Theatre teaching professional actors to use sign language in their performance.

I have also collaborated on projects with Moon-Space Theatre creating shadow puppet animations, providing voice overs, and creating sensory art. I have used these skills to facilitate work with my peers in the drama sessions alongside the workshop leaders.

Join Hannah’s workshop

I will be leading the sand art workshop with artist Douglas Black. This multi-sensory workshop uses light, shadow and video to create simple and engaging animation loops. Workshop participants will create live effects in film and video. We can’t wait to work with you!

Paper making with Andrew M

I have been coming to Henshaws since it opened 24 years ago. I have worked in the pottery and paper workshop. I love tearing paper into different shapes and sizes and I then arrange these into collages creating overlapped forms and patterns.

Working with paper made me want to understand how it was made so I decided to learn using recycled products like egg boxes and shredded paper. I really enjoy the process of paper making and as my skills and experience has grown I have been able to teach and instruct my peers on the process and technique.

Workshop Leader Sharon says:

Andrew is a very patient guide and explains clearly to those having a go at paper making for the first time. Andrew has been pushing his knowledge further by adding his torn shapes into the paper he makes and he often adds herbs or oils to his work to enhance the sensory experience of making paper.

Andrews abstract collages have been exhibited in and around Knaresborough and also featured in the Mercer Gallery Open Exhibition in 2019.

Andrew will be a patient and attentive guide – he is looking forward to teaching you the basic technique of paper making.

Lino Printing with Jenna

Jenna is a prolific artist working in paper, pottery and print. Her attention to detail is second to none and this really comes into play with her printmaking work. She designs and prints in both linocut and silkscreen.

Recent projects include mythical beasts where she made some fabulous reduction linocuts of unicorns and a mermaid design which she printed onto tea towels, t shirts and tote bags.

For our Waterlogged installation at Fountains Abbey she has made some edited Lino prints of underwater scenes with dragonflies, fish, dolphins and whales using her signature ombre technique.

Join Jenna’s workshop

In this workshop Jenna will be showing you how to print your own linocut designs working with a press and hand burnishing with colour techniques. You will have the opportunity to develop your own design or to print from some of the ready cut lino blocks available.
