How did you get involved with Henshaws?
I live in Leigh, but I’m originally from Salford. My background is health care within the NHS but following the completion of a BSc Social Policy degree in 2016 I decided it was time to move forward and utilise my new knowledge and skills within the community.
I volunteered for Henshaws 20 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so when I saw this position advertised I believe it was fate!
What is your role?
This role is new in Wigan and is in partnership with Wigan Wellbeing and Resilience service. I am a team of one so have had the opportunity to shape the project and ensure that it provides a first class service to visually impaired adults across the borough.
Following a referral into the service, you can also self-refer, I offer a home visit to the client where I carry out a holistic assessment of their needs and formulate and individual plan of support. I offer information, advice, and guidance on a range of issues from; housing, benefits, daily living skills, aids and equipment, and much more. I can also refer to other services in the borough where appropriate.
What do you offer?
I am passionate about welfare rights, and reducing social isolation, so I have worked tirelessly to set-up various other types of support avenues and social activities!
Henshaws in Wigan now offers:
- Coffee mornings on the last Tuesday of every month 10am-12pm, starting 28th February (WN1 3RT)
- Information, advice & guidance drop-ins on Wednesdays 10am-12pm, starting 1st March (WN2 5DA)
- Exercise classes on Mondays 10am-11.30am, starting 20th March (WN1 3RT)
- LWSL is also coming in the late spring so stay tuned!
I’ll also be running coffee mornings in Leigh (WN7 1DB), on the last Thursday of every month 10am-12pm, starting 30th March.
