I Can Do It’s fun-filled week at Children’s Adventure Farm
Last week, our independence course 'I Can Do It' spent the week at the Children's Adventure Farm in Altrincham, for a fun-filled week of cooking, animals and adventure!
There were 12 children aged between 8-13 who came for the five day residential course, and it was a great opportunity to meet other kids with a visual impairment. It was wonderful to see new friendships formed over the week, and to see how supportive the children were of one another, especially when it came to guiding other children with lower levels of vision than their own.
The children undertook a varied programme delivered by Henshaws including sessions on confidence building, dealing with bullying and stress, handling money, personal safety, specialist equipment, and future plans.
Their hectic week included grooming, walking and feeding the farm’s animals, hearing from Guide Dogs, learning about healthy eating before making their own pizzas and cake pops, as well as a brilliant visit to Chester Zoo.
The Children’s Adventure Farm shared:
“Having partial or no vision certainly didn’t stop the children trying absolutely everything – they’ve had a ball! It’s been so lovely to see them all change as the week has progressed – when they arrived on Monday they were all a little nervous as none of them knew each other and for many this was their first experience of an independent holiday without their parents.
You wouldn’t recognise the children today – after just a week together they’ve made friends for life and their confidence has grown so much. Their independence has improved massively, with many saying they will now be able to do more for themselves, and their families, when they return home.”
I've learnt how to help out in the kitchen and make pizza. When I get home I'm going to help my mum round the house more!"
