I Can Do It! Natalie’s diary – independence in the home tips

Our ‘I Can Do It’ course is up and running in Tameside, and what a great time we’re having!

In our first week of I Can Do It, we covered safety tips and advice for around the house.

Here are some of the top tips we’re encouraging our attending children and parents to use to develop independence within the home – let me know if you find any useful, or if you have any other tips you’d like to share!

Around the house

  • Encourage your child to help with daily chores, and support them in developing a problem-solving ‘can-do’, positive approach to these tasks.
  • Assist them in creating a routine so that they don’t have to be told every step: go into the classroom, take off your coat, and hang up your coat etc.
  • Ensure the environment is organised so your child can find items for themselves. Allow them to explore where things live at home, and establish which rules are consistent for instance, the milk is kept on the same place on the same shelf in the fridge and once finished it can go in the recycling bin.

In the kitchen

  • Label things in braille, magnetic alphabet letters or large print, if appropriate, to assist your child in using the kitchen independently.
  • Encourage ‘practice runs’ of Image result for braille labelsskills when appliances are unplugged or cold, i.e. plugging in an iPad to charge.

In the bathroom

  • Choose a toothpaste with a flip lid – they’re easiest to use!
  • Place the toothbrush and toothpaste in a place where your child knows they are kept. They can always put the toothpaste on their finger and rub the paste on their teeth so they are not having to co-ordinate the toothpaste and the toothbrush.
  • Let your child know which tap is hot or cold, and if they struggle with left and right, you can tie an object of reference to the tap to help identify it eg. a plastic band around the tap.
  • In the shower or bath have a non- slip mat, which should be  Image result for non slip matplaced in the middle of the shower tray or bath, so it’s easy to find.
  • Have shower gel that hangs in the same place within the shower so all your child has to do is put their hand under the bottle and squeeze with the other hand.
  • In the bath you can add the bubble bath first while the bath is running.
  • Remember to let your child know to put cold water before hot, and let them know where the towel is for easy access.
