I Can Do It! Natalie’s diary
I'm Natalie, the Enablement Officer for Children and Young People at Henshaws. I run our independence course for young people aged 8-18 called I Can Do It, and I'll share the latest updates, tips and stories from our courses and our fab graduates.
We had a great few days last week supporting some of our young people to develop their independence skills at Henshaws HQ. Upon completion of every course, each child or young person delivers a speech about what they’ve enjoyed and learned during the course in front of their parents, peers and staff. Here’s what one of our sixteen year olds had to say:
“I enjoyed being in the kitchen and learning new skills. We made sandwiches, pizzas and cornflake cakes. I also liked reading Book Four of The Adventures of the Three Men. Because of the course I can cut vegetables and I feel more confident using a knife. I have learnt to join in more with the group. In the future I hope to make games and write more of my adventure books. I would like to be more independent and use public transport all the time.”
Our independence course for children and young people covers:
- Social & Emotional Skills
- Keeping Safe at Home, Outside and Online
- Living independently with a VI
- Kitchen Skills
- Transitions, goals and aspirations
If this is something you would be interested in attending, our next course runs from 9.30am-3pm over the next three Saturdays in Tameside.

We can't do it without you
Henshaws rely on voluntary donations; our work just wouldn’t be possible without people like you. Your support empowers local people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities to increase their independence, achieve their dreams, and go beyond expectations.
