Following the many personal phone calls we have made in the past week, please find below formal confirmation regarding the closure of the Henshaws Arts & Crafts centre in Knaresborough. Any delay in communication was due to us wanting to contact people personally first.

In common with many other charities, Henshaws has been hit hard financially by the Covid 19 situation, leading us to make some difficult decisions about the services we provide to our community.

Our Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough has been impacted greatly by the pandemic in the short term, having closed its doors back in March.

To protect the future of the Centre, longer term changes will also be necessary. We need to ensure we are delivering a safe service for our Art Makers, and a service that is economically viable for the charity which has suffered in the last few months.

Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre will therefore not open in the foreseeable future, and not as before.

We are considering options for what the future of the Centre will look like. Providing a safe and sustainable service will be at the heart of our decision making. We are very keen to gather opinions and thoughts from all stakeholders to develop and open a broader offer for a more developmental centre in future – and one that is sustainable. We will be consulting with staff and communicating our plans with Art Makers, local authorities and the wider community as we move forward.

We understand the current closure of the Centre will undoubtedly cause a great deal of distress to the art makers, families, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders and we will do everything we can to help during these sad and uncertain times.

These are extremely difficult decisions being taken in exceptional circumstances and our team will continue to support people across Yorkshire in every way we can. We hope to work together to build a stronger Henshaws for the future.

Everyone we phoned will receive a written confirmation and we will also be posting any updates to the Arts & Crafts Facebook page. We have already collated many questions from the calls and there will shortly be an FAQ on our main Henshaws website and will post a link to that here when it is ready. There are still a lot of unknowns due to the current situation and this will be a dynamic document.

We respectfully ask that all enquiries are sent to:-

We do not have the capacity or resource to reply to any questions or feedback unless it is through that channel and please understand that replies may take longer than usual.

Kind Regards
