For Lauren’s Journey and her family, Henshaws is more than just a service, it is a transformative, life-changing community that has provided Lauren with the support, care, and opportunities she needed to reach her full potential. This is truly a Henshaws Specialist College success story.
A New Beginning at Henshaws Specialist College
At 19, Lauren, who has autism and a learning disability, joined Henshaws Specialist College in Starbeck. From the moment her parents visited, they recognised that this was the perfect environment for Lauren’s Journey. Excited for Lauren to begin her next chapter, they swiftly submitted her application, reassured that she was about to embark on a journey full of possibilities.
The Support Lauren Needed to Flourish
Henshaws College offered Lauren everything she needed to thrive. The peaceful, scenic grounds provided a tranquil space for her to take calming walks when she felt overwhelmed. With a team of dedicated staff working tirelessly to support her, Lauren’s Journey quickly began to flourish.
Specialist support such as speech and language therapy, clinical care, and a tailored curriculum helped Lauren to grow both academically and personally. Her personalised curriculum focused on developing essential life skills, independence, and confidence. Lauren engaged in activities like Forest School, cooking lessons, PE sessions, and work experience at local businesses such as Cogs Café and Starbeck Swimming Pool. Her time at college also included creative pursuits in drama and horticulture and even the completion of the prestigious Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Finding Her Voice: A Moment to Remember
One of the most powerful moments for Lauren’s family was when they witnessed her singing in the Makaton Choir. Despite usually speaking in a whisper, Lauren’s voice was unexpectedly powerful. Her choir leader, Maria, shared how impressed the staff were to hear her hit the top notes, which brought an emotional and unforgettable moment for Lauren’s Journey and her parents. It was a clear example of how Lauren’s unique talents were recognised and celebrated at Henshaws.
Learning Independence and Preparing for Adulthood
As Lauren approached adulthood, she took a crucial step towards independence by staying in the residential flats once a week. This experience allowed her to develop life skills while enjoying fun, memorable moments with friends. The sensory room became a safe retreat where she could relax and find peace.
The day of her graduation arrived far too quickly for Lauren’s parents. Watching her celebrate with friends, dance, and revel in her achievements was a proud, unforgettable moment for Lauren’s Journey.
A New Chapter at the Arts and Crafts Centre
Lauren’s journey with Henshaws did not end after graduation. Today, she attends the Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre in Knaresborough three days a week, supported by a dedicated one-to-one carer. Lauren enjoys engaging in activities such as textiles, papier-mâché, jewellery making, and performing arts workshops. She continues to sing in the Makaton Choir and participates in Music More, sharing her infectious happiness with those around her.
Once a month, Lauren and her mum visit the Art Makers’ Disco, where she dances the night away, though she never wants the night to end!
A Life-Changed: Lauren’s Story
For Lauren’s Journey and her family, Henshaws has been nothing short of life-changing. From the Specialist College to the Arts and Crafts Centre, Henshaws has provided Lauren with confidence, purpose, and joy. Her family can’t imagine where Lauren would be without the support and opportunities that Henshaws has given her.
