Henshaws Pop-Up Shop opens at Mercer Art Gallery

Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre is working in partnership with the Mercer Art Gallery this autumn to bring Henshaws Pop-Up Shop to Harrogate.

From Saturday 12th October to Sunday 3rd November Henshaws Pop-Up Shop at the Mercer Gallery will be stocking a range of handmade, original products created by Henshaws Art Makers.

The range of gifts available to buy includes hand-printed cards, tea towels, tote bags, beaded jewellery, coasters, and cushions. By making a purchase from our pop-up shop, you will be supporting people living with disabilities to discover their talents, put them into practice and realise their full potential.

Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre provides creative and employability workshops for people living with a wide range of disabilities. Since we opened in Knaresborough with just 50 Art Makers, in our 21st birthday year we now support more than three times this number every week.

Sharon Hockin, Henshaws Workshop Leader has been working on the Pop-Up Shop over the last 12 months and says it is wonderful to see the idea brought to life.

“The Art Makers’ work is beautiful and it deserves to be seen. We wanted to give people a chance to enjoy it in a different setting and we are delighted to be working with the wonderful Mercer Gallery to showcase these lovingly handcrafted products.”

“All of our featured artists have a disability but we don’t want their disabilities to be the first thing people think about. They are artists and their work deserves to be seen as pieces of art. I hope that through the pop-up shop we’ve let the products speak for themselves and we’d love people to come and see the unique pieces on offer.”

"I love the process of making things"

Dolly is one of the Art Makers featuring in the pop-up shop. She creates diverse artwork, from a disco ball embellished with paper beads to lampshades created using steel nuts and wire. Dolly said:

“My work brings together the kinds of things I like – shiny objects, different shapes and textures. I love the process of making things. I find it very relaxing and therapeutic.”

“I like working with steel because it’s shiny and that makes it easier for me to see. I’ve enjoyed coming up with my own ideas for new ways to use it including coasters, earrings, necklaces and lampshades. There are no limits to what I can create. I enjoy the process of making and creating artworks that are different.”

“When I was younger I never had much confidence. As well as being creative, coming to Henshaws has really helped me learn to stand up for myself.”

The Pop-Up Shop coincides with the launch of the popular Harrogate Open Art Exhibition at the Mercer where all artists with a Harrogate connection are invited to submit their work. We are delighted that three of our Art Makers were chosen to be featured in the exhibition. Congratulations to Andrew, Julie and Linda whose work will be on display from now until the new year, so please do visit if you can.

Henshaws Pop-Up Shop is open daily until Sunday 3rd November at The Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate. Find out more about visiting the gallery and opening times here
