Why Families and Carers Should Attend Henshaws Specialist College Open Day 2025

Choosing the right college is one of the biggest decisions for families and carers of young people with special educational needs and disabilities, at Henshaws Specialist College, we know that you want more than an education provider. You want a safe and supportive environment where your young person feels understood, encouraged, and able to thrive. This is why we invite you to ourSaturday 11 October 2025, from 10am to 12pm, for the first Henshaws Specialist College Open Day of the academic year.

Attending the Open Day gives you the chance to see how we combine learning, care, and personal development. Families can tour classrooms, therapy spaces, and residential flats. You will also meet the dedicated staff who work with students every day. In addition, you can ask questions, hear about our tailored support, and picture what life could look like for your young person at Henshaws.

Our Students Stories

Lauren, celebrating her graduation, holding a 'Class of 2024' photo frame with the words 'Congrats Grad!' She is wearing a pink sash that reads 'Henshaws Graduation 2024' and smiling in front of a colourful outdoor celebration.

Lauren’s story shows shows why visiting matters. Her family wanted a place that understood her autism and learning disability.

At Henshaws, Lauren discovered new passions and built confidence through speech and language therapy, Forest School, creative arts, and work placements.

In addition, she achieved her Duke of Edinburgh Award and performed with the Makaton Choir. These experiences not only created milestones that filled her and her family with pride, but they also showed her potential. Furthermore, living part-time in residential accommodation helped her prepare for adult life. As a result, Lauren grew more independent and confident.

Cameron’s journey highlights another reason to attend. Cameron is non-verbal and autistic, and he faced daily challenges with health and communication.

At the College, our team worked closely with him and his family. Together, we adapted his diet, supported his personal care, and created new ways for him to engage in student life.

This compassionate and consistent support gave Cameron greater comfort and confidence in his daily routines. Families who attend the Open Day can see first-hand the people, spaces, and resources that make this progress possible.

College Student Cameron sat in the sensory room with balls and lights.

The Henshaws Specialist College Open Day 2025 gives you the opportunity to see these stories come to life. You will meet the staff who support our students and learn how we work in partnership with families and carers every step of the way.

The event will be held at Henshaws Specialist College, Bogs Lane, Harrogate, HG1 4ED. Attendance is free, but please book in advance so we can prepare for your visit.
