Henshaws College - Speech and Language Therapy

What is Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)?

Our therapists will work with you on your speech, language and communication skills. Our skilled team also support students who have difficulties with eating and drinking.

Who is SALT for?

Any students who struggle with speech, language or communication will receive personalised support from our team. You may be experiencing difficulties expressing yourself, understanding language or engaging in social interactions. Or you may need help accessing alternative methods of communication.

What does SALT involve?

Support is personalised to each student but may involve:

  • Consultancy therapy: where we assess the support that you need. We will help you to build skills and will identify communication methods that may suit you best.
  • Embedded therapy: this may include using communication devices, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), Makaton signing or Intensive Interaction
  • Group therapy: providing opportunities to focus on a specific topic such as social skills. You may learn about starting or joining in conversations, talking about feelings or understanding language.
  • Dysphagia support: students with eating and drinking needs will be assessed by our therapist. A mealtime plan will then be put in place for support staff to enable safe eating and drinking.

What are the benefits of SALT?

Speech and Language Therapy can help you to:

  • Feel more confident.
  • Interact socially with others.
  • Express your wants and opinions.
  • Maintain positive relationships with others.
  • Eat and drink safely.
