Chess Club

If you enjoy chess or want to learn in a relaxed, welcoming environment, the Chess Club at Manchester Central Library offers a great way to play, meet others and feel included. The chess club for visually impaired players is open to everyone and runs twice a week. It’s a casual, drop-in space with no need to book or register in advance.

Importantly, the club includes a tactile chess set for blind and visually impaired players. Just ask the staff member on duty or visit the Archives+ desk and they’ll be happy to help.

When & Where:

The Chess Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30pm to 7:30pm in the Handling Space on the Ground Floor of Manchester Central Library. The space includes a number of wheelchair-accessible tables. If needed, staff will support seating arrangements to make sure wheelchair users can join comfortably.

Who is eligible?

The group is open to everyone, regardless of experience or ability. Players of all ages and backgrounds are welcome, including those with a visual impairment. You can stay for the full session or just drop in for a quick game.

What to expect:

The atmosphere is informal and friendly. There’s no formal structure, which means you’re free to arrive when you like, take part in a match, and stay as long as you wish. The space can get busy at times, particularly in the centre, but quieter seating is available around the edges.

Booking Required:

There’s no need to book – just turn up and join in.
