Role title: Volunteer Driver
Purpose: To drive visually impaired passengers to and from activities
Location: Greater Manchester
Time:Half day per week or month, usually within working hours, with some admin time
Expenses: Out of pocket costs paid in-line with Henshaws Policy
Great for… Learning new skills, adding to CV’s, supporting study, meeting new people, gaining knowledge & confidence and becoming a great communicator.
You’ll be volunteering for Henshaws as you drive our visually impaired guests to a range of interesting activities – such as museum visits, craft sessions and musical performances. You’re welcome to take part, or spend time between travel at your leisure. Once the activity has finished, you’ll support our guests back to their home.
You’ll be volunteering between 9am – 4.30pm weekdays for around half a day. A typical journey is between 3 – 10 miles each way, for which you will receive travel expenses.
This role will require you to have basic DBS check.
You’ll need to have access to a car capable of transporting passengers safely and legally.
Ideally, you’ll already be a friendly, organised and patient person, able to empathise with and support others. You should also be a safe experienced driver, capable of navigating motorways and busy city roads. It would be helpful if you had some knowledge or experience of living with sight loss.
We’ll work with you to feel comfortable supporting people with visual impairments via our immersive training. Alongside this, we’ll help you prepare risk assessments and deal with difficult situations. Occasionally, we’ll also ask you to support the charity in other ways, such as fundraising or giving talks, which you’ll also receive training in.
