Woodwork Workshop

We are often busy during the spring and summer months making garden benches for visiting members of the public.

Later in the year, we will usually make a number of Christmas decorations followed by bird boxes which we hope to sell in the spring.

There are suggested themes throughout the year for window displays which we may work on if practicable.

The work is often quite physical and this may help with strength, coordination, and dexterity. The work is often sold to members of the public and therefore could boost the confidence of those involved.

Some projects are made independently and often require problem solving skills from each individual. Where possible, it is encouraged for the artmakers to work out problems for themselves.

In this workshop, we use occasional simple sign language or mimicking the action of tools. Examples of work can help, so rather than suggesting we make a bird box, providing an example of one usually works better.

Woodwork at its easiest can still be a challenge. Accepting the difficulties and overcoming them will bring a degree of satisfaction.

Most Artmakers have been doing woodwork for many years and have experience with many different projects. Most, if not all the artmakers say they have a great relationship with their instructors and thouroughly enjoy overcoming the challanges they face during the session.

Woodwork demands a level of skill which even at its most simple can exceed the abilities many of our Artmakers. Nevertheless, with suitable tools and appropriate projects, Artmakers are able to work with some independence.
