Creativity and independence are at the heart of what we do. We are devoted to making a difference to the lives of the people we support. Here some of our Art Makers share their stories from Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre and explain how they have found the confidence to go beyond expectations.
When James first started attending the music workshop he found it hard to concentrate for the whole session and would sometimes leave the room with his support worker. By supporting James to get more involved in the session, he has now become more confident and loves singing along to a range of music.

Christine had hardly used a computer before joining our IT workshop. Now she has learnt new ways to use technology in her daily life and she loves coming to our sociable workshop sessions.

Barnaby has been able to gradually reduce his personal support needs as he’s become more confident and independent through taking part in our horticulture workshop.

I like pottery because our workshop leader is fantastic. My favourite activity is painting bright colours and guessing what they are going to look like when they come out of the kiln.”
Sally, Art Maker - pottery
It has helped me develop new skills. I hadn’t done embroidery before I came here. I love it because I can be focused. I’ve learnt how to wind a ball of wool. I can use all different colours in my work. Henshaws is a good place to come to.”
Gavin, Art Maker - textiles
When Craig first started in our cook it workshop, he would often sit in the corner wearing his headphones and not be interested in joining in with the food preparation. But slowly we have supported Craig to try foods in a safe environment so he now feels confident to try new things.
Everyone working with Craig has seen a massive change in him. As well as having a much healthier diet, he now talks and laughs with the group and is happy to join in with the session.
