James’s story

When James first started attending the music workshop he found it hard to concentrate for the whole session and would sometimes leave the room with his support worker. By supporting James to get more involved in the session, he has now become more confident and loves singing along to a range of music. Shaughan Ferguson, our workshop leader shares his story.

“I wanted to make sure James felt included in our session so I asked his support worker what kind of music James liked and discovered that James enjoyed hearing the theme music to Dad’s Army. I asked the group if they’d like to learn it, they said they would and so we did – James has requested it every week since then!

I noticed that James seemed to know most of the words to the song so we experimented with different microphones to find out what worked for him. He now wears one of our radio microphones and loves singing along to the tune. When I heard James singing quietly in the background of another session I realised he also knew the words to many other songs. By encouraging him to request the songs that he knows, since then he’s also enjoyed singing songs by Elvis Presley and ‘Magic Moments’ by Perry Como which is now another of his weekly requests.

The difference in his confidence was clear to see when James sang in the live final of our Henshaws Got Talent competition last November. With help from his support worker and workshop volunteers he did a great job singing in front of an audience with huge enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of fun! It is fantastic to see how his confidence has grown.”
